Several Russian cities have announced they will scale back this year's Victory Day celebrations.
Russian authorities have cited security reasons and attacks from pro-Ukrainian forces for the changes.
Explosions and fires have occurred in Russia in recent weeks.
But some have argued that the reduced events show the Kremlin is nervous about celebrations turning into shows of dissent against its invasion of Ukraine.
Great pomp and shows of military might are the usual hallmarks of Victory Day, which marks the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany on 9 May 1945.
One of the day's most recognisable events is the Immortal Regiment procession, which sees people across the country marching holding photographs of their relatives who fought in World War Two.
Last year, President Vladimir Putin led the procession across Red Square in Moscow while holding a photograph of his father in uniform.
This year, however, the Immortal Regiment "will be held in other formats for security reasons", lawmaker and organiser Yelena Tsunayeva told journalists last month.

I think he’s very low or out of hardware, and soldiers, too, for the usual big parade of might and strength.
The Rooskies are scared sh*tless that young Russian mothers carrying blown-up photos of their dead 19-year-old sons might suddenly show up and "disrupt" the festivities on nation-wide tv.

dissent is WAY overdue. the russia people need to express themselves
I gather you have never been to Russia. Expression is a long prison sentence which many do not survive.
better to die than live as a slave
Day 434 of my 3 day war. I have so many victories that I have to cancel victory day parades in Russia cos of all my victories.
I remain a master strategist.

Yeah brave talk.
You can be brave while they kill all of your family, rape all the women with broomsticks, cut the throats of males after they are raped. And for good measure, do the same to your neighbors. Then take you to prison where you will never leave and be raped daily until you die.
Brave talk sitting in a comfy chair all nice and warm eating snacks as you browse the internet.

I have a different opinion than you.
Imagine that.
Your insults say more about you than me.
Yes, I would rather die than live in a country like Russia or Iran or North Korea.
Well its a matter of where you live - in Russia its a different story and things have changed since the 18th century - so pithy quotes and just that: pithy and pathetic; and virtue signalling is for liberals.
You have no idea what the Russian people face for dissenting; they have no choice.
But then, you are apparently just out for yourself and have no care what your suggestions would cost real people facing real oppression endure.
A VIEW FROM THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS
As Mark Wauck summarizes “Ukraine’s professional military knows that the offensive would be suicidal. Ukrainian losses of manpower continue to be extremely heavy—Russia is claiming that Ukraine lost 15,000 men in April. Losses of equipment are reaching catastrophic levels as well, as Russian attacks have heavily targeted assembly areas for munitions and equipment.”
If Zelensky’s cowardice allows America’s foreign policy neocon scum to push Ukraine into a doomed offensive, it will be the most wasted effusion of blood yet in this catastrophic “proxy war.” And it will be the most disgraceful ending possible to the Neocon’s 30 years “forever war” that dropped the United States from a half century illusion of dominant hegemony to an also ran with an obsolete defense establishment and a wrecked economy, all in less than 2 years..
I care about Ukraine and Ukrainians who are currently fighting and dying for their freedom and independence.
If the russian people ever decide to fight and die for there’s, I’ll probably support them too.
