ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Former Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White and his son recently traveled nearly 6,000 miles to Ukraine for work to dig up landmines.
KOAT first told you about the story at the beginning of April
Advertisement White has since returned from his 10-day trip to Ukraine, and KOAT’s John Cardinale had the opportunity to sit down with him about his experience.
"It's unsettling. It's eye-opening. And at the same time, it's heartbreaking,” White said. “We see the images on TV, but that is nothing until you see it firsthand. It's estimated that because of the war, Ukraine now probably has more land mines than any other country on the planet to the point where there are probably over a million.”
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as of March 2023, there have been 758 civilian casualties in Ukraine caused by land mines and explosive remnants.
White’s land mine removal effort is focusing on fields.
“Many of the landmines have been deployed in the fields where these crops are grown, and farmers are dying because they are taking chances,” said White. “They're taking their tractors into the fields, and they are driving over these landmines.
Ukraine is one of the world's largest exporters of wheat, so planting mines in the fields is a tactic the Russians are using to hurt Ukraine's economy.
“The phrase that we use is, harvesting landmines and feeding the world,” White said.
But the work is not easy and can be extremely dangerous.
“We were told about a site in Kherson where 12 miners had died doing the work,” said White.
White said while removing landmines in one field they had a close call.

The Russian military is unified in trying to get out of the stinking war.
A first class huckster. An Albuquerque cop, turned TV reporter who became DPS head under Gary Johnson. Dramatically resigned when Johnson said marijuana should be legalized. Then took over a local AM talk show.
When weed was legalized, guess who because a dope dealer?
His company.
Saw a new opportunity for self promotion in Ukraine.
White said while he is back in the U.S. the work is not over.
He is now working to raise money to build a training academy in Ukraine to teach people how to de-mine on their own.
During the 10-day mission around 50 mines were de-activated
Uh oh. Earlier in the article it said there were a million mines and WHY or HOW could some of that “peaceful” Western aid not be used for the academy?
I’m trying to figure this out. The Russians are just waltzing on to Ukrainian farms and planting land mines? How does that work?
Particularly comical is the local news story video. At the 2 minute mark, they show a video clip of a brush fire in New Mexico to illustrate Russian bombs somewhere in Ukraine.
SMH...
Yep, that is a classic from this guy. Found a way to mine money from US aid to Ukraine.
During initial invasion on February 24 of last year, they also planted mines in territory initially taken. While withdrawing during counter-offensive, they planted more as mementos. The Russians are gone from that field, but their mementos remain. Same thing went on on Baltic beaches after the Nazis were driven back.
I thought the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights was only concerned with trannies, pronouns and stealing your kids for sex trafficking.
