Ukrainian forces have used Maxim machine guns, a weapon often associated with World War I, to mow down frontal assaults by Russian troops in the battle for Bakhmut.
"It only works when there is a massive attack going on," a Ukrainian soldier identified as Borys, 48, recently told BBC News of the Maxim gun. "Then it really works."
"We use it every week," Borys added.
Ukrainian forces have found the Maxim M1910 — was first introduced in 1910 (the initial version of the gun emerged in the 1880s) and employed by the Imperial Russian Army during World War I — useful in the fight against the Russians. Ukraine's troops have modified the guns with modern add-ons such as optics and suppressors, according to reporting from Task and Purpose.

Nothing at ALL wrong with a suppressed Maxim with an optic, except that it’s heavy to move if you have to displace and one hopes there are parts available (unlikely if it was scavenged from a museum). But running down a well maintained Maxim is like running down a 1911 or a Lee Enfield or a Winchester 1894. All are as solid and deadly as the day they were made.
But that gunner makes the mistake many amateur machine gunners make with those two and three shot bursts. Commoners think that demonstrates trigger skill, but you are basically reducing it to a rifle on a tripod doing that. Machine gunnery is a dying art. Even Chesty Puller lamented that.
Isn’t that the truth...
But they still have not gained back Putins land bridge - I doubt they will even get the chance.
.
To be fair, we must have total arial supremacy to operate A10s. Any enemy air at all is a no go for the hogs.
A water cooled Maxim gun,on the other hand, as long as it doesn’t really have to move and can advance a belt, strip a round from the belt, chamber it, fire, extract, and eject it without issue, would be more useful in this case than an A10 as long as there’s hostile air around
Agree. There probably are very few of them, parts are an issue, etc.
BUT, that suppressed Maxim, with an optic? Nasty gun, doesn’t overheat, very heavy which sucks to move but is -wonderful- in the emplacement. If it is in a carefully chosen position, it is still quite a defensive weapon.
Indeed. Portability is it’s issue, not lethality.
Portability doesn’t matter much when they are coming at you.
This video provides a brief Front Line Update of areas like Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Zaporizhzhia, Maryinka, Kherson, etc.. We discuss changes made to the front line and analyse the current situation with a neutral approach.
They don’t scare the Chinese and are of limited utility (unlike Swiss Army knives). According to the SEC USAF.
Hiram would be proud with the “mods”, have driven by his house many times and smiled!
If it works and they have ammo why not?
The maxim is a heavy beast but is water cooled and can fire all day if watered and oiled. However, if you sit in one spot all day you’d probably get some accurate artillery dialed in on your position.
The Ruskies have captured about 93 to 94 percent of Bakhmut. Do the Ukes think they can still win this one?
A10’s would be useful substitutes for SU-25’s.
They are very similar aircraft built to the same spec for the same role.
Both sides have used a lot of SU-25’s in this war. And both sides have lost dozens of them.
They use them because neither has anything better, under the tactical circumstances.
The USAF can shape better circumstances and use different aircraft and munitions for this role.
The Ruskies have lost 100% of Kherson city. The Ruskies have never controlled 100% of Zaporizhzhia, a Ukrainian city of 800,000, that Putin delusionally claims is part of Russia. History shows us nothing about Russia is forever.
A10’s would be very vulnerable to the Russian SAM umbrella.
That makes them useless beyond the immediate edge of the battlefield, just like the ex-Soviet SU-25’s. And they would risk high casualties even then.
They would be useful where the opposition has much less formidable air defense. More or less what was once called a COIN role - counterinsurgency. The A-10 is a formidable COIN aircraft.
We have had air superiority and we plan to have it in the future.
We will not have air superiority if the enemy has something better than the F-22s and F-35s.
And if that were to happen nothing we have on land will be safe and nothing we have floating in the ocean will be safe.
Oh you mean Russia conquered Ukraine?
Bakhmut/Aryomovsk is to 90% under Russian control and the rest will be captured during the next few days. Ukrainian losses in the city must have been huge. The Ukrainian troops who try to escape from the city immediately come under artillery fire. The latest daily Russian clobber report counts 575 'enemy losses' in Bakhmut over the last 24 hours for a total of 815 along the whole frontline. This is the largest number reported over the last two months.
They now have to send human waves trying to capture it in order to not look like losers and Ukrainians just shoot them.

Oh really, Bakmut is a dense building populated city. Human waves, huh? I guess you haven’t viewed the video of Vlads artillery hammering Bakmut into rubble, or Vlads latest glide bombs leveling 10 story buildings burying the inhabitants for blocks….of course the western interview by a captured Ukie stating they have never even seen a Russian, just getting “ reduced” 24/7 by shelling is just propaganda. Okay.
When you wake up, you will find drinking the western MSM has given you one heck of a hangover.
