A Massachusetts prison was left in tatters following a six-hour standoff between inmates and staff, where the prisoners trashed the facility and brandished sharpened furniture as weapons.
Shocking photos recently released by police show the aftermath of the standoff that broke out in two housing units at the Bristol County House of Correction on Friday, with rows of hallways and rooms left completely in ruin.
Along with the destroyed doors and windows — and trash that was littered everywhere — the photos show the makeshift hammers, axes and shivs.
Altogether, officials say the inmates caused about $200,000 worth of damages at the jail...
The Bristol County Sheriff’s Office said the stand-off broke out when the inmates were supposed to be moved to allow for construction at the jailhouse that would help keep inmates locked in their cells.
The housing units have communal bathrooms, meaning that under state law, the jail could not lock inmates in their cells.
Officials said the prison was looking to add toilets, door locks and suicide-resistant bunk beds to the cells, but the inmates refused to be moved for the renovations.

As tensions rose, the correctional officers stopped the process and quickly left that area of the prison to avoid becoming hostages, locking the doors as they ran.

The prison opted to keep negotiating with the prisoners while they waited for reinforcements, with 130 to 150 officers deployed to subdue the inmates with flash bangs and pepper spray.
Officials said no one was injured when the prison was taken back, and that those involved in the standoff were moved to other cells or jails in other counties.

Gee, did they say the riot was caused by “overcrowding?”
That’s what the excuse was in California for the governor to release all kinds of violent criminals.

Low life prisoners in a low life state.
The obvious solution is not “The Hole” or “The Hotbox,” but to let half of them go free.

Wondering how long this law had been in effect and how long had the prisoners been living with unlocked doors and - no problems?
Until a decision was made (by whom) to change that?
Incarcerated and having a “freedom” taken away after how long?
Yeah - I’d be a bit upset as well if unlocked doors had been SOP for some time.
There was a similar incident a couple of years ago in a county jail 2 counties over. Jail deputies went in with 12 gauge pump guns with rubber bullets. Department policy was to aim for the extremities to minimize serious injury. Evidently some of the deputies defined the head as an extremity. Sent half a dozen of the miscreants to the hospital. The inmates were rather docile after that.
Good point to publicize. Someone has to spread the truth.

Next time run the renovations past the inmates for their approval.
Swatches of colors and fabrics. Inmate group discussions with the interior design people to get inside each other’s minds and feelings about the trending uses of small spaces integrated into styling concepts.
The late great G. Gordon Liddy used to have total disdain for prison guards. He said the only difference between the guards and the prisoners who shared the same environment for most of their waking hours was the guards could go home after bullying and feeling superior.
Personal lubricants would help.
There was a bit of a stir awhile back when they were talking about letting Gary Ridgway out. Don’t think that would have gone over well.
Probably not because he was too high profile.
The families of the victims show up every time one of the Manson “family” comes up for parole. After Sharon Tate’s mother died, her sister went to the parole hearings - to make sure those bastards die behind bars. There are also representatives from the Folger, Frykowski and Sebring family that appear at each and every parole hearing.
I understand one of them was set to be released and Gavin Newsom stopped it - one of the few good things he’s done.
All of them should have been executed years ago.
I’m sure there are plenty more vicious criminals who are being quietly released.
This never happened when Tom Hodgson was sherrif.
Shoot the rioters and bury them under the new jail/prison.
