Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said on Tuesday she was personally against abortion rights but bore no ill will for those who felt differently, in a rare foray by a Republican White House hopeful into one of the more sensitive issues of the 2024 U.S. election campaign.
In a roughly 20-minute speech, Haley described the debate around abortion as an issue for each state to decide.
While she would favor legislation restricting abortion rights at the federal level, she said that as a practical matter Republicans were unlikely to win the majorities needed in Congress to impose their agenda.
For the time being, she said, all Americans would need to work to establish a consensus on the issue.
"I believe in conversation. I believe in empathy. I believe in compassion, not anger," said Haley, a former governor of South Carolina and the only female candidate in the Republican presidential race. "I don't judge someone who is pro-choice any more than I want them to judge me for being pro-life."
The issue is a thorny one for Republican candidates, and they have largely avoided talking about it in the early months of the 2024 campaign. When they have discussed it, they have struggled to commit to specific policies.

Like night and day.
Haley/Mace would make a good feminist ticket.
I’ve read several articles lately advising conservatives that their stance against abortion is a losing political position. These people never stop to think that the position is not a political one. It is a moral one.
“she was personally against abortion rights but bore no ill will for those who felt differently”
Mealy-mouthed coward. Is it a human life or not, Nikki? If so, you are saying it’s okay to murder, as long as you only murder babies. Is that what you’re saying?
Baby murdering hordes aren’t just Democrats.
It says a lot about nikki that her only path to the White House is through the moderates are rhinos in the GOP!
Yes, but she was talking to the “glint in the father’s eye” people. She’s an unlikely person to be a consensus seeker on this, but she can do math.
NOPE! Wasting money dividing party. The republicrats are unlike actual democommies. Even the fact that most democommies don’t want branDUHn to run, if he’s the pick, they’ll vote for him. Speculation, due to lack of mention of carmela ‘fweedumb’ hawiss for the next go around, is grabem gruesome will get the VP nod and once the campaign is underway, joementia will have to withdraw for medical reasons and grabem will give the tried and true “Let’s win this for Joe!” sympathy vote pitch. Between that and the mail in ballots-—————100 million. Then, stick a fork in us!
She is a Satanist.
There should be NO TALK OF ANY KIND ABOUT ABORTION.
It is a Democrat issue to prevent their women segment from straying.
The only way to slice off women from their monolithic array of support is the athleticism issue of denying biological women the ability to compete against only biological women — and make very sure this is a position attached to GOP voting. Dem voting erases athletic scholarships from biological women.
THAT IS THE ONLY ISSUE INVOLVING WOMEN THAT SHOULD BE DISCUSSED.
The Dems made a party wide decision to lean heavily on the USSC ruling and use it to close down the Red Wave last year. It worked. And they want to ride it in 2024 by incessant talk about abortion because that points at suburban women.
Don’t play that game. Play your own game.
Of course, just like racial division tactics from the Dems keeps Blacks on their plantation. Oh, and both work very well as a strategy.
Yeah, no thanks, Nikki.
Every f-ing election cycle some at-heart liberal comes along and a consultant convinces them they've found a way to "reach across the aisle" with this stupid "personally against abortion" canard. It never works. Like the Aesops fable about "The Dog & His Reflection" this kind of "reaching out" causes them to loose both sides. And yet every cycle some reporter trots out a story on it as though this is a great new winning policy stance. Its like a bad joke that keeps getting retold by drunks in bars.
