It reminded me, of all things, of the death of Anton Webern, who somehow survived living in Nazi Germany without ever getting in trouble with der Fuhrer, only to be killed while sitting outside smoking by an American occupation solder, Raymond Bell. Complicated story, but IIRC Bell committed suicide soon after out of guilt for killing an innocent musician.
Wow. Terrible story.
Music for the human ear, and violence between humans, seem like so much polar opposites. Such a shock to see them mentioned in the same story.
