Florida county to OK employees carrying guns at work

Even in many pro-gun counties, government employees who aren’t law enforcement don’t get to carry guns at work. In many cases, it’s not a huge deal. Many workers are in protected buildings and they wouldn’t carry a gun anyway.

Others have to travel for work, often in sketchy parts of town while being responsible for a lot of expensive equipment.

They’re a target.

Yet one Florida county is looking to possibly change that.

The Manatee County Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt a new policy allowing county employees to carry firearms at work.

Commissioner James Satcher first made the proposal last May, but the updated policy was delayed by legal review and a recent change in the county’s management. Following the adoption of the rule, staff will be allowed to carry guns in the coming weeks.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a written policy was not ready for public review, according to Bill Logan, the county’s information outreach manager.

Tuesday’s decision marks another controversial decision by a conservative board that has tackled culture war battles, such as banning diversity initiatives and reviewing content at public libraries. In March, county officials approved a Second Amendment Sanctuary resolution supporting gun rights.

The county’s new firearm policy allows properly licensed employees to carry guns while working. Satcher said the proposal is meant to allow employees to defend themselves in the event of an emergency.

If this policy is implemented, Manatee County, Florida will be one of the most safest counties in the nation in which to work.

I suspect all across America employees carry firearms without the knowledge of their bosses or co-workers. Especially in an office setting where one can easily be concealed in a brief-case, office tote bag, or purse. I know one of my bosses had one in his desk drawer because I saw it when looking for a document he had misplaced.

Many are carrying anyway. Even in the office where they have deranged leftists threatening them all the time.

I knew of at least two where I worked that carried. Hoped they were around if one of our somali temporaries went postal. A ‘gun free’ work place, of course.

We are allowed to carry at work. Not to be seen or discussed.

My former employer (retired) had a strict anti-gun policy. So I never brought a gun into the building; however, I did keep one hidden in my car. I figured that being close to buckhead (Atlanta) any trouble would occur on the commute. Fortunately nothing ever happened to me. A couple of other employees were robbed over a fifteen year period.

That's great.

Just sad we have to have permission to carry tools to protect ourselves.

If it weren't for family, close friends, and some obligations we would leave OC, CA and head to Florida. We are amazed what the State and Counties are doing there. In case we change our minds, is there anywhere in Florida that is not insect infested?

Any other conservative States to recommend that is not being overrun by Cali socialists? Anyone?

In Alabama, we can’t necessarily carry at work but they did pass this law:

“A public or private employer may not restrict or prohibit the transportation or storage of a lawfully possessed handgun or ammunition for that handgun in an employee’s privately owned motor vehicle while parked or operated in a public or private parking area; provided, that the employee satisfies all of the following conditions:”

I did not paste the restrictions; they’re common sense gun storage restrictions. When I was working our corporate headquarters put out the “no guns at work policy” to include parking lots. I called my boss and told him that was illegal in Alabama and they changed it to something like “in compliance with local laws” or something.

Officially our policy is “do not have firearms in the fire station unless you are a certified police officer also.” That got unofficially translated for everyone as “don’t leave it out in plain view.” There are probably more firearms than there are people most days.

TxDOT didn’t like it, but due to court challenges by employees, we could carry concealed at work before I retired in 2016.

I worked with an African American lady and we got to visiting about guns. She had a restraining order against an ex but new a piece of paper wouldn’t stop him. She requested a locker where she could put the gun during work hours bt was refused so she took to conceal carry because she didn’t want to walk from her car to the building unarmed.

And all else being equal, I’ll take nature’s parasites over government parasites any day of the week.
