Couldn’t the result be due to the occasional movement of the intertropical convergence zone of the ocean’s currents both toward and from the equator?

“The global AIR temperature has gone up about about 1 degree Celsius since global satellite AIR temperatures began in 1979, 44 years ago.”

Nope. The DMSP spacecraft has measured temps since the 1960’s and the temps have gone DOWN a hair.

You’re right about satellites measuring Lower Troposphere air temperatures, but they also measure many other temperatures. Actually, they don’t actually measure the temperatures, they measure radiation from the areas, which relate to temperatures. The satellites are in polar orbits, which means they sweep over the entire earth’s surface after enough orbits, so they can actually cover the entire earth’s surface. Dr. Roy Spencer has the latest monthly lower troposphere temperatures here, about a quarter of the way down: https://www.drroyspencer.com/

There are many other measurements, including sea surface temperatures here at WattsUpWithThat:https://wattsupwiththat.wpcomstaging.com/reference-pages/ocean-page/oceanic-oscillation-page/

There are a number of plots there which link from other sources. They are generally the most up to date available, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are up to date. It’s important to note the date of the plot. many can be several years old. I did not find a current one for sea surface temperature, so it’s not clear which one was used by the article you linked to. The first one on Watt’s pages shows record high sea surface temperature, but the date is 2015.

Another point is that spring temperatures are totally meaningless. several weeks after the spring equinox (right now) temperatures are changing most rapidly all over the earth. Northern oceans and land areas are increasing rapidly, and Southern oceans and land areas are decreasing rapidly. Even satellites can’t catch the temperatures at a stable point. It takes a number of days to scan the entire earth. If the scan happens to start at a high temp region and end on a low temperature one the temperature would be biased high, and vice versa. An average is meaningless.

Could be, and we have nothing to compare it to.
