Once read that only 3% of the population in 1776 fought in the war.......true?

I heard the same thing.

The way I understand it, the British occupation was all about co-opting colonial farms, mills, bridges, barns, crops, ports, shipyards and munitions depots.

So, Washington spent most of his efforts burning down same. That pissed off many a colonial. So it was easy for the British to make out Washington as the bad guy - just like Trump is the bad guy now.
