The irony of this is hilarious. In the 1920s, the second iteration of the KKK was strongly opposed to immigrants, most of whom were Catholic. Rumors were spread that they were only loyal to the Pope, and that they kept guns in their basements waiting for the signal to revolt.
I know a bit about this as my father’s side were Acadians who ran away from the British and settled in the Saint John Valley. They had some troubles with the KKK up there because unions were looking to recruit them as loggers, etc. The KKK would have none of it because Catholics were considered subhuman. They even set off a bomb in one town, thanfully no one was injured.
