Climate change is making major league sluggers into even hotter hitters, sending an extra 50 or so home runs a year over the fences, a new study found.
Hotter, thinner air that allows balls to fly farther contributed a tiny bit to a surge in home runs since 2010, according to a statistical analysis by Dartmouth College scientists published in Friday’s Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. They analyzed 100,000 major league games and more than 200,000 balls put into play in the last few years along with weather conditions, stadiums and other factors.
“Global warming is juicing home runs in Major League Baseball,” said study co-author Justin Mankin, a Dartmouth climate scientist.
It’s basic physics.
When air heats up, molecules move faster and away from each other, making the air less dense. Baseballs launched off a bat go farther through thinner air because there’s less resistance to slow the ball. Just a little bit farther can mean the difference between a homer and a flyout, said Alan Nathan, a University of Illinois physicist who wasn’t part of the Dartmouth study.
Besides resulting in more home runs, a warming climate will likely require more domed stadiums because it will simply be too hot outside for humans in some places.
“Global warming is going to reshape so many of the things that we care about in so many pernicious and subtle ways,” Callahan said. “And the fact that we’ll get to go to fewer baseball games played in open air is not a civilization-ending crisis, but it is another sign of the way that we have reshaped our lives due to our greenhouse gas emissions.”

Climate Change...is there anything it can’t do?
Put the PIPE Down Seth, you are making a fool of yourself as always.
This sounds like something our old friend JG would proclaim.
Despite the idiocies coming out daily by our moronic press, it does show (to those who have real STEM degrees and are NOT being supported by goverment ‘research’ grants) just how very science illiterate our media is.
Analytics started killing the sport. Placing a runner on 2nd in extra innings during the COVID lockdowns and keeping that idiotic idea after the lockdowns had long ended drove the stake into the heart.
Climate change can increase the temperature so much that the change can’t be measured.
I thought colder denser air added lift. That’s why some planes run out of runway at high altitude airports in hot weather. Am I missing something?
Beyond comical
Everything leads eventually to baseball.
Uhhh, it's called "Rain Outs", they are expensive, and naturally owners want to avoid as many rain outs as possible, that's why there are fewer open air games.
It’s amazing to me that something as permutationally complex as climate, is moving in a direction where 100% of things are bad in all places, and it can all be fixed by a tax that people pay for carbon credits.
"In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I'll be safe at home!"
- George Carlin
True dat! Last week there was a thread here on FR, some scientific meteorological outfit reported there has been NO discernable increase in global temperatures in the past nine (9) years. I wish I’d saved it.
We should deman d our money back and everyone involved in the study should be fired and have their degrees revoked. The so-called journalist who wrote this tripe of an article should be fired for being so hideously gullible. Lastly, anyone that believes this needs to suffer thru a statistic course over and over again until they pass.
100,000 games. 200,000 balls into play. 50 extra home runs per year. Does anyone see anything just a little questionable about the study? Eff’n mathematical mental midgets. (It’s to only way to make climate change the cause of everything.)

Better living through Communism!
Dumbassery.
Yeah.
It cant explain why we just had the biggest winter since records were kept in the Sierras.
Oh wait - that would be “extreme weather” - the all purpose get outta jail card.
And thats how “global warming” ends up causing massive snowstorms and arctic cold!
Right. Sure.
Rules rule. No mention of rule changes. Rule #1,all things bad are caused by the climate.
