Cohen pled guilty to several counts of tax evasion and making false statements. I'd say those were more of the "it" which led to prison time than the dubious at best campaign finance law violation.
Cohen pled guilty to crimes HE committed, bozo. You miss all that? And thus is a convicted felon for real as a “star” witness. Atty client privilege ignored and exploited and mixing his money all part of that very real crime by a street level nobody.
