$20K in today’s dollars. Mustangs are over $32K today (basic model).

we will never have a new vehicle again in our lives...we aren’t on rich govt pensions and we need to watch what we do...

Watched a car auction over the weekend.
Seems like everything is up 15-20% on average.
70s muscle cars over 100,000$ now.
ECE vehicles are going to become an expensive hobby if our totalitarian government has its way.

NEW PONTIAC station wagon==$3434 out the door with tax & license-—Feb 1965.

PUT OVER 444,000 miles on that car-—sold it to a guy in Sweden & he restored the exterior. RAN FINE.

$5500 in 1980 ==> $21,267 today

$8800 in 1980 ==> $34,028 today

Now ... compare engine specs from 1980 vs 2023. I don't mean displacement, I mean horsepower. You'll find that those 1980s V8s were rather weak by today's standards.
