Actually it was a label designed to get conservatives to sit at home and not vote to allow the Left to gain more and more power...to “teach the GOP a lesson”. “The GOP”, of course, aren’t the ones having to live with the consequences of that way of thinking.

I don’t disagree with your sentiment, but having the advantage of hindsight now that I did not possess 30 years ago, the thing that screwed us the most was “bi-partisanship” and the “uniparty”.
There are far too many bi-partisans who are labeled as conservative.
The “uniparty” is full of conservatives.
When the opposition is dead wrong about something and you meet them halfway and compromise constantly are you going in the right or wrong direction?
This, along with the complacent and ignorant citizenry you point out, is how we got to where we are at now.
