California has seen a population decline of more than 1 percent since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with an estimated 500,000 people leaving between April 2020 and July 2022.
In the state where annual wildfires and treacherous mudslides threaten homes, the population dipped by slightly more than 508,000 since 2020.
San Francisco and Lassen counties experienced the largest population declines, at 7.1 percent and 7.5 percent respectively.

People that remain in the bay area are insane. There’s just nothing left. When the housing crash comes, its going to be even worse.
Jobs. Weather. Location. Family. Money.
Not all of the Bay Area is crap.
It is crap when the entire state is run
by lefty lunatics. The conservatives that
reside are hesitant of the efforts to
leave. It’s not easy to pull up roots
in a state that has the best weather
across the 52. I lived there (bay area)
50 years ago. It was great then, a sewer
now.
This is why communist must build walls to keep their people from leaving the “paradise” they create. If California could, they would also build a border fence (not to keep illegals out, but to keep the productive ones in.)
I live east of LA in Socal, but I can smell the stench of SF from here.
Reason 318 why I’m glad I don’t live anywhere near CA. That place must really suck.
The real number of people who left is 700k, not 500k. The difference of 200k is because of illegals and births.
Democrats don’t care - having half a million people leave helps their net zero goal and locks in another 500,000 votes each election.

People, especially families with kids, have been fleeing for decades.
They are flocking to red states. You will know them by their masks. Spreading the cancer of progressivism.
Just remember as you flee, you’re a Refugee, not a Missionary.
Lassen County? That’s a surprise.
Oh? What part isn’t? That is, aside from the areas only multi-millionaires can afford? I was there in February… it’s pretty much a trash heap.
500,000 is almost one congressional seat a year. This is why they count “migrants”.
Lassen County is on the Nevada border northwest of Reno.
Why are people leaving Lassen?
We are seeing them come to rural Texas. It's a shock for them. One commented to me: "It really is the wild west here." I replied: "Yeah. And, people can disappear without a trace. So, I hope you didn't bring any of that west coast liberal BS with you."
They are reveling in the newfound freedoms they now have. But, they are learning that it comes with a price. That is, they have to be more self-reliant, and not rely on the government or anyone else to wipe their butts. So far, most that I run in to are conservative thinkers who were looking to escape. However, I'm sure there are some who will be unhappy that the liberal way of life is non-existent in my county.
Rats fleeing a sinking ship to go infest another area. The number of Kalifornia license plates in our area is staggering. I can only hope and pray they are passing through.
Most of the escapees from California I have met here in SE Texas are independent minded and want to escape the madness. They are grateful to be here.
But there are a whole lot of liberals who are moving to the Austin area. Travis county will never come back to sanity.
