Russia says Ukraine ceasefire now would not achieve Moscow's goals
Reuters ^ | March 31, 2023 | Staff Report

Russia said on Friday that a ceasefire in Ukraine would not enable it to achieve the goals of its "special military operation" at the moment.

The Kremlin was reacting after Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko - Russia's closest ally - called for an immediate ceasefire, without preconditions, and for both Moscow and Kyiv to start negotiations on a lasting peace settlement.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Russia had noted Lukashenko's comments and that President Vladimir Putin would discuss it with him next week. But he said Russia's goals in Ukraine could not be achieved at the moment through a halt in fighting.

"In terms of Ukraine, nothing is changing, the special military operation is continuing because today that is the only means in front of us to achieve our goals," Peskov said.

He said parts of a plan proposed by China for peace in Ukraine were "unrealisable at the moment, due to the unwillingness - or rather the inability - of the Ukrainian side to disobey their supervisors and commanders".

That was a reference to Moscow's claims - unsupported by evidence - that Ukraine's Western backers have ordered Kyiv not to pursue a ceasefire.

"These commanders, as we know, are not sitting in Kyiv and insist that the war continues," Peskov said.

Russia has said it is open for peace but has made clear this would only be on its terms. It says Kyiv must accept the "new realities" on the ground, where Russia has seized and claimed to have annexed more than a sixth of Ukrainian territory.

They’re on the ropes now. They wish for a breather to gather strength and then attack again.

“Russia says Ukraine ceasefire now would not achieve Moscow’s goals”

What was the Neocon reaction to a cease fire?

https://www.voanews.com/a/us-opposes-chinese-cease-fire-proposal-in-ukraine/7010939.html

Sounds like we have agreement here - both sides want to slug it out until the end. And why not, the West isn’t losing any troops (or at least not disclosing their loses)!!!

“Russian idea of peace...pffft!”

This thing was triggered by the Ukraine taking advantage of the fall of the Soviets in 1991. It’s no different than the US civil war only the Russians waited until the local Ukrainees created a profit of the land. The only difference is thae the US south had an independently strong economy. The Ukraine at that time did the Russians a favor by running away. But that changed.

“In 1991 Ukraine was one of the poorest Soviet republics. Statistics for the time are notoriously uncertain, but the best ones available show Ukraine’s GDP at just $1,307 per capita. Only Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan lagged behind Ukraine; even Moldova and Turkmenistan, generally regarded as very poor Soviet republics, were ahead of Ukraine.”

I think this is a mistake. Both Militarily and Strategically. China is right, this summer will likely end it for one side. Should be interesting when the ground becomes firm for armored vehicles.

Since Russia’s goal is the conquest of Ukraine, it’s obvious that a ceasefire won’t achieve that.

I don’t think Russia will stop until Ukraine ‘s military is destroyed on the battlefield. I’m sure they have a ways to go before they achieve that goal.

Russia has “goals” does it?

It has a lot of moving goalposts,

Denazification: dropped by the Kremlin because most of Russia didn’t buy it.

De-Europeanisation: has completely reversed the De-Europeanisation attempt by Yanukovych and Putin in December 2023. There’s 1000 times more Ukrainians in Europe now than there were 10 years ago.

EU NATO expansion: two words. Hi Finland!

Russkyi Mir: just got undermined by a total prostration of Russia to China. Even Lukashenko grovelling to Putin wasn’t as pathetic as Putin grovelling to Xi.

Reversing the Russian demographic crisis: well, they stole 20k Ukrainian kids and lost 2 million of their best and brightest. Math clearly not their stronk point.

Any others?

Who does he think he is, Xi Jinping?

“I don’t think Russia will stop until Ukraine ‘s military is destroyed on the battlefield”

The Russians don’t give a sh-t about the Ukraine military. The Russians deal in worth of what they can have in the Ukraine when Ivan can walk in. Metal trade, food, and a number of other exports along with nuclear power and chasing the US out of there are high on their list. Russia could have ended this thing physically a long time ago as it has been going on since around 2014. They want the worth in the country, not the land or cities unless they produce something tangible.
