This tactic is designed to confuse juries, to give CNN serious things to yammer on about, and to give the jury a way to convict on one count while acquitting on the other 29. That’s a good way to help the ideologues on the jury pull a conviction out of the one New Yorker who might want to actually apply the law and evidence.

it’s a tax return... tweak one field, many others will be affected.
meanwhile, given that he does not do his own taxes (he runs 500+ corporations and his return would be thousands of pages long)... everything that was done on the returns was prepared by a small army of tax accountants whose job it is to verify legality of various things.
most politicians don’t have returns that complicated.
