That’s the kind of amoral, pragmatism substituting for morality that has gotten us to the current depraved state our culture is in. Self-government and liberty cannot exist without religion (actually, Biblically-based religion, specifically). Every freedom that we enjoy is a direct result of western civilization, and the Judeo-Christian worldview that is its foundation. American-style liberty REQUIRES a religious and self-restrained populace.
That’s why John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” The freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution become nothing more than license to commit evil if the people are guided by nothing but their own desires and whims. Adams was pointing out that our system of government can only work when the populace is largely religious (meaning Christian in that day), and therefore restrained by an EXTERNAL moral code, i.e. given by God.
We can survive a certain level of public immorality, borne by atheism, but once it reaches critical mass we end up with the hell scape that we are now drowning in. This nation is founded on Biblical principles…whether you like it or not. If you want something else, you’re in the wrong place.

This is why people are surprised when these Godless “Christians” and “Catholics” do Godless things like demanding we legalize the killing of babies and at the same time demand we neuter all the self-defense-minded, law-abiding gun owners.
It is also why these same people are surprised there is no built-in mechanism to thwart the evil within our Government...because our Constitution was written with the idea, hopes, and plans for America to grow MORE morally and religiously inclined; therefore, We the People would be self-regulating...not fewer morals, less religion, and less self-regulating!!
Our Founding Fathers never thought a person like FDR, LBJ, W, Obama, or Biden would be elected by the morally and religiously guided American populace. Sadly, we have reached that critical mass you mentioned, as even Churches are changing Biblical teachings to accept the immorality of today...whatever it takes to keep their coffers filled!
I weep for the future of my grandchildren!
That said, being able to describe how something is bad while going beyond ‘because [my understanding] of God said so,’ is useful and meaningful. Especially to unbelievers.
