With all this turmoil going on now in Israel I can’t help but recall what Henry Kissinger said 11 years ago - that Israel would probably cease to exist within a decade. He thought it would be because US support for Israel would wane by that time and Israel wouldn’t last without that support.

I guess nobody expected an internal dispute among Jews. I saw 2 Israelis arguing between themselves on another site one liberal and one a religious conservative. It appears their differences are implacable. The lefty said there’s no way he was going to live in a theocratic state and that all liberal Jews would move to the US or Europe if Netanyahu gets his way. I don’t know anything about the nuances of Israeli politics but this sure seems like a serious division over there.

From the perspective of the secular Left, Israel is having a “demographic crisis”, because the religious have been rearing lots of children, dramatically increasing their numbers. A consequence of this is that the influence of the secular Left in the popularly elected Knesset is continually waning. So they cling to power by other means, making a lot of noise and threats in the process.
