Rand Paul opposes TikTok ban bill: ‘I think it’s a mistake’

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) declared his opposition to a possible nationwide TikTok ban as many members of both parties push back against the platform, saying a ban would be a “mistake.”

Paul told Fox News in an interview on Tuesday that he believes a ban would violate the First Amendment. He noted that TikTok is unavailable in China, which is where TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is based.

“I think it’s a really bad idea. And people need to ask themselves, why does the Chinese government ban TikTok, and do we want to emulate the Chinese government? So I think it’s a mistake,” Paul said. “If you ban a social media platform, you know, I don’t know if you get any clearer that that goes against the First Amendment.”

Paul’s opposition comes as bills have been introduced in Congress in recent months to directly ban the downloading and use of the app and to grant the Commerce Department the authority to review and possibly ban technologies linked to foreign adversarial governments.

Punchbowl News reported that Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), who introduced the federal TikTok ban, said he will seek unanimous consent for his legislation in the Senate on Wednesday. He told the outlet Tuesday that no one had raised an objection to the bill to him yet.

I agree with Rand here. Censorship is not the answer.

Besides it would be real easy to just create a new site that works just like TikTok. You’re treating a symptom, not the disease.

He should be asking why it is banned in China, but exported around the world.

China isn’t at war with itself, but with the world and this software has to be considered one of China’s tools for warfare because they are operating under the philosophy of Sun Tzu.

The only thing I believe should change is bring bills you have the votes for. At least 100 percent republicans.

Let a US company create a sister site then. I agree with you that somebody should, but I don’t agree with the idea that we shouldn’t be banning Tik-Tok, considering China’s belligerence.

It’s owned by the Chinese regime and ByteDance is required by law and corporate charter to establish a CCP chapter on the worksite.

China is our enemy. It is trying to supplant and suppress us. They’re at war with us; we refuse to acknowledge it.

The ?current bill, the RESTRICT Act, is horrible. It’s essentially a Patriot Act for the internet. But the issue of banning TikTok is a different question.

Well if it’s about China, there are a LOT of other companies to go after.

Go after all the ones that could be used to wage war against Americans.

Like the so-called Patriot Act. Maybe at the time it seemed like the thing to do, as long as the “right people” are in charge. But what happens when the “wrong people” are in charge?

I like Rand Paul but I disagree with him on this. The CCP is our biggest enemy and they are using TiK Tok to corrupt our society and to gather data on Americans.

What does “censorship” have to do with it? It is CCP spyware for the West (and others) to track their behavior and create IA to predict our behavior before we even have decided what we will do, and influence what we do.

The whole Internet is “spyware”. You think Google doesn’t share info with the ChiComs?

Two different issues.

Quit trying to play games with the facts and just respond to what was said.
