I recall Nancy Pelosi giving a tour of her freezer with all its expensive ice-cream. I think people in high office get so separated from the reality of the rest of us that they become tone deaf regarding what they say and how it might be interpreted.
In general, the less we know about people the more popular they’re likely to be. Take Obama. Every time he gave a speech his numbers went down. But whenever he was absent from public view for a long time, they went up. People tend to project their own thoughts onto leaders and those thoughts are always better than the real thing.
