There has been another train derailment leading to a hazardous waste leak. This time the incident occurred in North Dakota.
As reported by KFGO, several Canadian Pacific train cars derailed “with some spilling hazardous material in Richland County.”
“Authorities say it happened around 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 26 just one mile southeast of Wyndmere, ND,” the report noted. “31 cars of a 70-car train derailed, with some leaking petroleum used to make asphalt. At this time, authorities are saying there’s no danger to the public.”
“Canadian Pacific says its hazardous material experts are on scene along with local authorities to asses the situation,” the report added. “Officials say there is no fire and no waterways nearby. It’s estimated it will take seven to 10 days to clean up the mess.”

It’s a shame we don’t know how to build pipelines so we wouldn’t have to carry so much of this over delapidated tracks—oh wait a minute...
Danny Taggart, please pick up the white courtesy phone...
Train derailments are quite common in the U.S. The Department of Transportations' Federal Railroad Administration has reported an average of 1,475 train derailments per year between 2005-2021.
When are they going to burn the material like in East Palestine? That worked out so well....,..
Sue Justine true-DOH.
See? Them trains is so much safer & cleaner that them dirty old pipelines.
Say what? Huh?
the still don’t like pipelines
Pete’s team will be right on this. /sarc
There is a big difference between petroleum and the chemicals spilled/burned in Ohio.
Good job Pete
If Dagney Taggert picks up the white courtesy phone, it had better be Hank Riordan on the other end or nothing good will happen.
What good are all of the surveillance drones doing railroad reconnaissance across the nation?
Please tell me Dagny hasn't transitioned...
I can’t necessarily speak to the train/rail industry specifically, but I’ve been in industrial maintenance pretty much my whole working life.
I’ve spent time in oil refineries, corn processing plants, aerosol/refrigerant plants, and various chemical manufacturing facilities.
Bean counters run these places now. They’d much rather run things to catastrophic failure than to shut down production in order to perform proper preventative maintenance. They encourage you to pencil-whip inspections so that they can minimize downtime.
When they actually do bring down or take equipment out of service, they’re breathing down your neck wondering how long it’s going to be before you’re done.
It gets really fun when you start finding stuff wrong on inspections. I don’t know how many times I’ve written on work orders and inspection forms that the equipment shouldn’t be returned to service until deficiencies are corrected. They don’t care. They want to run and make product.
Trump’s fault.
I assume all this anti-pipeline stuff isn’t to protect the environment so much as it is to protect the profits of people like Warren Buffet and other railroad investors.
It’s North Dakota. Nothing to see here...
“protect the profits of people like Warren Buffet “
BINGO
The article said it was petroleum used for asphalt, so I’m guessing it was bitumen.
That stuff is about the viscosity of thick molasses. They have to use special cars with steam coils inside of them to heat the material up enough to get it to flow once it reaches it’s destination.
Pipelines are great for a lot of things, but that stuff isn’t one of them.
Warren Buffet, Democrat, owns the railways. He doesn’t own the pipelines. Get it?
