I think my oldest child was in 6th grade and youngest in 3rd when we went to Florence and saw the real David. They were not traumatized. What did these parents not get about “classical” education. They ought to be grateful their kids are on the receiving end of Hillsdale curriculum.

Were you in 6th grade when you were studying that subject?

True. My kids saw him too. I was lucky to be stationed in Italy for five years. We saw everything in Italy. Italians must be laughing at how weird Americans have gotten.

Yes it does. Michaelangelo was a great artist and the David is such great art. It’s real Beavis and Butthead to concentrate on his tiny member.

No. But one of my kids was when we saw it in person in Italy. He’s married with two kids so the experience wasn’t troubling.

Hard to know where to stand on this. 6th grade is 12 years old. Right before its about time for “the talk” with kids. By that time they’ve seen animals “do it” etc and they got a good idea whats up. Would I want my kids seeing someone else ‘splain a naked statue to them? I supposed if I were doing my job as a parent, this would be no shock to them. As a parent I’d like to know ahead of time what my kids are being exposed to (no pun intended...ok maybe sum pun).

David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, created in marble between 1501 and 1504 by the Italian artist Michelangelo.
David is a 5.17-metre (17 ft 0 in)marble statue of the Biblical figure David, a favoured subject in the art of Florence.

David was originally commissioned as one of a series of statues of prophets to be positioned along the roofline of the east end of Florence Cathedral, but was instead placed in a public square, outside the Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of civic government in Florence, in the Piazza della Signoria, where it was unveiled on 8 September 1504. The statue was moved to the Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence, in 1873, and later replaced at the original location by a replica.

Because of the nature of the figure it represented, the statue soon came to symbolize the defence of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence, an independent city-state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of the Medici family. The eyes of David, with a warning glare, were turned towards Rome.

The David is one of the finest sculptures you’ll ever see, It’s not naughty, or obscene, it’s a magnificent work of art, inspired by God.

Some of you here need to grow up.

Good thing the only controversy was over the statue of David. They’d really go crazy if they included the statue of the naked little boy peeing.

“ My understanding was that this lesson was not the real issue”

Yes. I need to know more about this. Was this about Michelangelo maybe being a homosexual and rainbow flags in the classroom? Is there some kind of scandal surrounding the principal?

These 6th Grade Parents might want to see what’s on junior’s cell phones before getting so worked up over a statue.

I’m sure there was more to this story. They just used this as a reason...

Amazing what will appear in the news for the oddest reasons. It's always analog time because the whole world is Hebrew school.

He noted the curriculum covers human reproduction and anatomy and anatomy in fifth grade, and that the studies do cover "Michelangelo's "David" sculpture and other works of art that depict the human form."

Indeed, the most famous statue in the world, depicting "Gentile" David. 🤫😂😂

Michelangelo's David is also famous for his oversized hands, and head! Kind of like...

And his origin is even more rough and tumble. The stone that became David had been rejected by the first two sculptors for being...

...flawed and difficult to work with.

Yet as for Michelangelo -- Can DO!

And the rest is history.

The school says it received complaints after a 6th grade art class was shown a photo of Michelangelo's "David."

There’s nothing immoral about the human body, it what is sometimes done with it.

Most art at the Vatican would be considered porn I suppose.

Only by conservative rubes. Of which there are plenty.

Yes, but teachers were not grooming kids sexually back then either, or at least we weren't aware if they were.

The behavior that has been going on recently, has struck a raw nerve. Therefore, overreaction is to be expected.

I also suspect that there may be more to this story, then we are currently receiving.

The press itself has been complicit in trying to paint a different picture regarding this topic as well.

They are pushing the narrative that teachers know what's best for the children, and that parents should have no say in the matter whatsoever.
