I had never heard of Sanhedrin. Did some googling, and from I can gather it was a group of 71 self-appointed judges.
So you’re right - the equivalent of Sanhedrin today would be the ABA (American Bar Association) if it were allowed to appoint all the judges. And that’s basically what they have in Israel today.
