Kids in uke orphanages were often very sickly from their institutionalization, too
Most of these children were removed from the worse conditions by the Russians. In fact hundreds were returned, there is a commission in Russia to find whereabouts of their parents. The fact that Galicians made only one child lie about his conditions out of 17 they tried to coerce into it is telling.
