Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Moscow would be “forced to react” if Britain gives Ukraine military supplies, including armor piercing ammunition which contains depleted uranium.

“The United Kingdom… announced not only the supply of tanks to Ukraine, but also shells with depleted uranium. If this happens, Russia will be forced to react,” Putin told reporters after talks at the Kremlin with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

I guess that DU ammo would be too destructive against the “bottom of the barrel” tanks and armored personnel carriers that Russia is moving to the front to replace those that have been destroyed by Ukraine.

We all know that Russia is taking Korean War and WW2 era armored tanks and vehicles out of deep storage. The armor on that old stuff would be easy pickings (depending on the caliber) for depleted uranium projectiles.

Depleted Uranium shells aren’t controversial because of the harm they do to opposing army; they are effective but not cruel weapons.

They are controversial because of environmental and post-war health concerns, but “surveys of DU residues from combat zones show generally low concentrations of the metal, within the range of naturally occurring uranium, though there may also be a small number of “hot spots”.”

DU’s main purpose would be piercing the poorly protected munitions of T-52 tanks. Naturally, being shot by any bullet is unhealthy, but “Medical monitoring of Gulf War veterans who suffered shrapnel wounds involving uranium has not so far revealed any serious health effects” of the uranium.
