I remember that. John Anderson was positioned as the "reasonable" Republican that would siphon off Reagan voters and hand Jimmy Carter an easy re-election.

He was the Mike Pence of 1980.

I thought at the time that John Anderson would have gotten nowhere except for Doonesbury giving him a lot of publicity--back when everyone read Doonesbury. Of course Trudeau was anti-Reagan.
