Ron DeSantis Is Definitely Running

He presents himself as a serious, forward-leaning, pro-business, antiwoke conservative Republican.

By Peggy Noonan

The first GOP presidential debate is five months away, in August. Primaries begin about six months after. This thing is on. Some observations on Ron DeSantis.

The Florida governor is definitely running. Every sign is there: donors, a growing and increasingly professional organization, a book that is part memoir, part platform and debuted this week at No. 1 on the New York Times list. A few days ago he gave a big, packed-house speech at the Reagan Library.

He’s come off a landslide 2022 re-election (almost 20 points) in which he won majorities of Hispanics, independents and women. He is 44, governor of a major state that was purple and has gone red, and there is no way (barring the unanticipated) he is not in. I read him as a guy who thinks you get a moment in politics, a magic moment, and when it comes you move because you don’t know if it will ever come again. “They’ll forget me,” 43-year-old John F. Kennedy said when advised to wait and go for the presidency in 1964. No, he’d made a splash at the 1956 convention, 1960 was his shot, move now or never.

Mr. DeSantis is a big dawg..

MSM will protect and push this fool but GOP electorate is smarter than that...all what he says is just to get elected once there will proceed with uni-party agenda including on Ukraine. TRUMP 2024.

NYT is selling DeSantis and now The WSJ. Come on people! This is too easy. DeSantis is the political establishment’s weapon against Trump. Vote accordingly.

If he’s the nominee, he’s definitely going to split the base and usher in another 4 years of Biden. Decimating the nation and his political career in the process.

Frankly, I wouldn’t believe a word of anti-Trump Noonan. When DeSantis announces I’ll believe it. And if he tries running against Trump in this round he will have demonstrated that he is quite stupid and doesn’t deserve to be a nominee. Ever.

So he ran for governor and then several months later he's a presidential candidate.

And of course that's why he didn't level with the people of Florida when he was asked about his presidential intentions.

Globalists to DeSantis: We don’t care what your platform is, for our support, just remember that you must give us TPP, just like you tried to before. We will handle things from there.

Ron is just playing this cagey. Rather than to announce, and therefore having to put himself out there to go head to head, answering Trump at every challenge, he coolly accepts all the arrows propelled his way (most of which are based in faulty logic and not really damaging anyway). This way, he looks much less damaged, and if in the course of things, Trump manages to overreach and self-sabotage his current campaign, then Ron is there as Plan B.

There is an advantage to having a deep bench, and Republicans have the further asset in that there are several tested and able persons ready and willing to seize the banner should for any reason Trump, now so clearly the front-runner, falters and is injured in a way that does not allow of quick recovery, there are several former Cabinet members, Mike Pompeo among them, that can pick up and run with the MAGA flag and do so convincingly.

Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley, both VERY long shots at this juncture, will probably end up getting the most fire so long as Ron remains undeclared, but note also that neither of them directly attacks Trump on much of anything. Trump is a notorious counterpuncher, and his most effective tactic is to utterly demolish the frontal assaults directed at him.

Ron DeSantis has every right to run and stab Trump in the back.

That’s called freedom.
