Ron DeSantis Says Protecting Ukraine Is Not a Key U.S. Interest
The New York Times ^ | By Jonathan Swan and Maggie Haberman

Posted on 03/13/2023 7:13:26 PM PDT by Kazan

Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida has sharply broken with Republicans who are determined to defend Ukraine against Russia’s invasion, saying in a statement made public on Monday night that protecting the European nation’s borders is not a vital U.S. interest and that policymakers should instead focus attention at home.

###

“While the U.S. has many vital national interests — securing our borders, addressing the crisis of readiness with our military, achieving energy security and independence, and checking the economic, cultural and military power of the Chinese Communist Party — becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them,” Mr. DeSantis said in a statement that Mr. Carlson read aloud on his show.

###

“F-16s and long-range missiles should therefore be off the table,” he added. “These moves would risk explicitly drawing the United States into the conflict and drawing us closer to a hot war between the world’s two largest nuclear powers. That risk is unacceptable.”

“A policy of  ‘regime change’  in Russia (no doubt popular among the D.C. foreign policy interventionists) ,” Mr. DeSantis said, “would greatly increase the stakes of the conflict, making  the use of nuclear weapons more likely.

Mr. DeSantis added, “We cannot prioritize intervention in an escalating foreign war over the defense of our own homeland, especially as tens of thousands of Americans are dying every year from narcotics smuggled across our open border and our weapons arsenals critical for our own security are rapidly being depleted.”

Apparently, DeSantis and Trump both have similar positions on the war in Ukraine and both are odds with neocons and those obsessed with fighting a proxy war with Russia.

While I agree with this sentiment 100% I cannot and will not ignore exactly Who is behind Desantis.
Who it is is pouring money into his pending campaign and those funding sources, Never-Trumpers, and their anti-MAGA roots.
All those who choose to ignore this are being played for fools. Others, not fools, are willingly complicit.

That’s because they are BOTH America-First patriots. There will be many warmongering neocon candidates in the 2024 Republican primary.

He is right about this.

And it’s going to be the defining issue.

It’s also illustrative of just how few Republican rank and file support Ukraine in this war.

Any Republican who advocates continued material support...or, worse escalation...is dead politically this cycle.

DeSantis is getting a lot of money from former Trump donors. Desantis has a path to the White House. Trump does not.

In related news, a local GOPee print shop was seen burning “DeSantis 2024” signs out back, and rumor has it that they are designing a sign that says, “Karl Rove ‘24: The Whiteboad’s Choice” with the full backing of DeSantis’s big donors.

Those who support DeSantis have the goal of defeating Trump and DeSantis. They want DeSantis to win the primary and Newsom the general election.

We’ve given a nine-digit amount to Ukraine already. Enough is enough.

Zelenskyy is talking about a $750,000,000,000 plan to rebuild Ukraine after the war, for a country whose national GDP was $200 billion in 2021.

That makes no sense. Trump is objectively weaker than DeSantis in a national general election in 2024.

I agree with both Trump & DeSantis: American First.
That said, the time to stop Russia is long past due. It should have been done by President Obama who stood idly by as Putin annexed Crimea in 2014.

Completely backwards. Many Trump supporters on here (including one just a few minutes ago) have said they would rather have Newsome than DeSantis, but no DeSantis supporter has said they would rather have Newsome than Trump.

That's because most DeSantis supporters just clearly see him as more conservative than Trump, so if not DeSantis, then Trump is the closest to being conservative.

For the Trump supporters saying they'd rather have Newsome than DeSantis, in their mind it's either Trump, or burn the whole country down in spite.
