EDMONDS WA — Jaxon Kennard learned that forests capture planet-warming carbon. So the soft-spoken seventh grader pitched in to remove tree-killing invasive ivy. When classmate Ava Woodsum discovered the high environmental cost of mining lithium for batteries, she researched sodium ion batteries, a potential alternative.
Other middle schoolers in the Climate Crisis Solutions Class at Maplewood Parent Cooperative gave presentations to elementary school kids.
“A lot of them paid attention a lot more than we were expecting,” eighth grader M.J. Pandow said. “They asked interesting questions.”
The elective course these students took during fall semester is taught by Bradley Barton. It has the hallmarks of climate education in Washington state: It is driven by the interests of the teacher. It is multi-disciplinary. The lessons are age-appropriate and in sync with state science standards.
Perhaps most significantly, the Maplewood climate class focuses on solutions right off the bat. The goal is to keep students optimistic in the face of a heavy global challenge. In the words of University of Washington researcher Deb Morrison, “We talk hope forward.”
Morrison has played a key role in a statewide teaching network called ClimeTime. In the past five years, Washington lawmakers have provided $18 million for ClimeTime and related efforts to teach public school students about human-caused climate change. Gov. Inslee is asking for another $10 million this legislative session. As a result, Morrison said, “we’re way ahead of other states” when it comes to climate education.
“We’re probably one of the farthest ahead, … in the top five in the world,” said Morrison, who participates in a United Nations climate education effort.
Grant funding for climate-focused professional development for teachers is at the heart of ClimeTime. Some grants go directly to organizations or to Native American tribes. Teachers can also apply for project-based grants.

The wife came home yesterday after staying a few days with the grandkids and great grandkids. The wife out of the blue said to me, people need not be afraid of holding teachers accountable.
She added, Washington State teachers voted to strike, (which is constitutionally illegal in Washington State, but…), at the beginning of the school year in the 90+ percentile! (Washington’s government are COVIDIOTS and kept the schools locked down longer than any other state) That means when you hear a Washington State parent say “the school system is crap, but my kids teacher is the best” means the best teachers also voted to illegally strike!
Best at what? Fooling the parent, that’s what. The sooner parents understand that teachers today are not your parent’s teachers instead teachers today are activists, groomers and handles perhaps all three at once.
Parents are getting it here in Washington. Since 2021 private school enrollments have increased by 100,000. Estimates are over 180,000 kids joined the ranks of homeschoolers and the public school enrollments are down 50,000 kids this year.
This is causing districts to consolidate and close elementary and middle schools. The teachers union which own most school boards in this state, are working hard to develop new revenue streams and deflect deserving criticism of the fact they diverted COVID CASH supposed to help deliver educational programs to students, instead it went to the teachers and administrators salaries.
Now districts have overpaid tools and not enough young tax paying victims to keep the indoctrination centers open! Glorious!!! I hope this trend continues until the unionists get defeated and replaced with school choice opportunities.
We deserve genuine educational reform and until we get school choice reforms, we’re wasting our time and children’s lives. They only get one opportunity and for 70-80 years we’ve been stealing that opportunity by having terrible educational systems.

It is really tragic what the radical left is doing to our children....
Kids have more anxiety and depression than at any point in our history.
We removed them from schools and forced them in masks
They are being brainwashed that the planet is being destroyed
They are being force-fed sexuality and gender confusion
They are being washed in a toxic pool of critical race theory
They are being told that every kid is a winner and standards and grades are being removed
Many of them live their lives within social media on screens
Poor children to include many “children of color” live in communities where the police have been driven away and crime and chaos flourish
Teenage drug usage is at an all-time high and illegal narcotics are cheaper (and more deadly) than ever
It is tragic and the consequences of this will last for decades
