With winter almost behind them, senior American generals hosted Ukrainian military officials this week for a set of “tabletop” exercises designed to help Kyiv map out the next stage of its battle to reclaim territory from dug-in Russian troops.
During a war-game session at the headquarters of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the military officials rehearsed a range of options for an offensive that Ukraine’s leader, President Volodymyr Zelensky, has been telegraphing for some time.
The sessions, attended on Thursday by President Biden’s most senior generals responsible for American efforts to help Ukraine, were meant to strategize, officials said, mapping out the risks and benefits of a variety of moves that Ukraine might make against Russian positions in the coming months.
Ukrainian officials will ultimately decide which course to follow, with the American military officials described as serving like a sounding board.
After one session on Thursday, Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, the supreme allied commander for Europe, praised the Ukrainian military’s “phenomenal” adaptability and said, “We’re going to help them adapt more.”
The United States and NATO, he said, “can keep going as long as necessary.”
The war games come as Ukraine is emerging from a winter that was expected to provide a lull in fighting. But both sides continue to take heavy casualties in the Russian onslaught against the eastern city of Bakhmut.
Earlier this week, Mr. Zelensky appeared to signal that Ukraine was preparing for a major offensive. He said in a speech that he had met with top officers in the military about preparations, as well as about shortages in weaponry and ammunition.

How about a nice game of Global Thermonuclear War?
Bring our troops home from Europe. It’s the source for all of Europe’s provocations against Russia. Europe might then have to learn to peacefully coexist with Russia.
Oh, so just flee and the mean Russians will go away?
Which makes the US base a legit target in the Ukraine-Russia war. Yet, we have not declared war on Russia. A very dangerous situation. Just like Bush had no business invading Iraq, Biden has no business involving us in this war.
Europe can defend themselves and do so with their money. Why should we do so unless they want to cede their soverignty to us?
Yes, and the collective West is sitting around war gaming while Vlad’s artillery hammer is actively pounding away with 60,000 rounds a day, reducing Ukies and “ boiling the Cauldrons “…….I am sure the poor Ukie soldiers that are getting clobbered 24/7 are comforted by that uplifting thought.
From the article “We’re going to help them adapt more.”……yeah right, I have heard it before, “ we are from the government , and here to help”. Laughable.
You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.
Reality is that Ukraine is going to deploy 60 to 70k mechanized troops no later than May.
Ukraine is going to launch an offensive. Russia knows this is coming and is desperately trying to make some advances before they are rolled back.
Why you keep saying the opposite is anyone’s guess.
What base in Germany?
Is this an example of modern journalism? All fluff and backstory for paragraphs and not who, what, when, WHERE and how?

“”Europe might then have to learn to peacefully coexist with Russia.””
Many of those countries just recently escaped Russian conquest and sought safety in a military alliance to avoid being enslaved again into peaceful coexistence with Russia.
“”while Vlad’s artillery hammer is actively pounding away with 60,000 rounds a day””
Where do you get your goofy ideas about this war, what sources are telling you that Russia is using 60,000 artillery rounds a day?
No, any country in the world that hosts soldier training of one side in a war does not become a legitimate target for attack.
Russia has lopped off the arms and legs of the Ukrainians and President Zelensky and General Zalushny insist it is only a flesh wound. This absurdity would normally be great grist for a comedy sketch. But there is nothing humorous about this war, it is a profound tragedy. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are being sacrificed needlessly because NATO wants to use Ukraine as a proxy to fight Russia. And behind these horrendous casualties there are hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian mothers, fathers and siblings mourning the loss of a loved one.
