A Florida bill that would require bloggers who write about the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis, to register with the state proved a step too far even for the godfather of far-right Republicanism, the former US House speaker Newt Gingrich.
“The idea that bloggers criticising a politician should register with the government is insane,” Gingrich wrote on Twitter.
“It is an embarrassment that it is a Republican state legislator in Florida who introduced a bill to that effect. He should withdraw it immediately.”
The bill was introduced by Jason Brodeur. It states: “If a blogger posts to a blog about an elected state officer and receives, or will receive, compensation for that post, the blogger must register” with the appropriate state office.
The bill defines “elected state officer” as “the governor, the lieutenant governor, a cabinet officer, or any member of the legislature”. As penalty for failure to comply, it posits fines of up to $2,500.

Nonetheless, DeSantis’s press secretary told NBC the governor would “consider the merits of the bill in final form if and when it passes the legislature”.

Agree. But if he is against it, he should speak out.
you’re calling him “demeatball” indicates you’re stuck on stupid...
Not much.
what is that??
I took it to disclose any payment for the post. Like political ads state who or what paid for them.
Looks we found Florida Man again. This time he’s a state senator from Daytona.
you put so many people down for Desantis
that he must be a more miserable bastard than i imagined.
thank you for exposing how horrible he is.
which toxic heavy metal are you?
then there is this, too:
Who elected this guy who flunked civics and hasn't read the Constitution?
hey karen...
telling the truth isn’t putting anybody down...
When was the last time you heard the media call anyone "far-left"?
I don’t know how you acquired such a kooky view of Ron DeSantis, but if you seriously think any of that is true, seek help.

“Are blogs even a thing anymore?”
I’ve had a weekly political/business/personal Journal since 1.12.96... 28 years, and still going strong.
It’s a troll.
DeSantis is also reportedly seeking “First Night” for him,
from any newlywed woman in Florida - HIS state.
= = =
Does any newlywed woman anywhere still have a “First Night”?
No: what is bad for the goose is also bad for the gander. Once you must register with the gov. for being critical of gov. then FR would also have to do so, and which would lead to monitoring and paying fees. And to censorship. Unconstitutional.
Slippery slope argument. The bill specifically says those paid to write an article, which then leads to the practice of lying and presenting the post as an independent opinion. I should have left the free part out of my earlier post. FR is not paid to write for anyone.
We can be purists all we want, fact is when you fight fair and the other doesn’t, you lose. In war you do not play nice and this is very much a war.
