Kids often worry about much different things than their parents do. One of the big ones is climate change. Research shows most youth are "extremely worried" about it, leading to a phenomenon called climate anxiety. Kids and young adults who struggle with this can perceive they have no future or that humanity is doomed.
"We see that a lot of young people are saying, I think my life will be worse than my parents' lives," said Dr. Sarah Schwartz, a professor of psychology at Suffolk University in Boston.
A study published last year collected attitudes about climate change from 10,000 people across the world, aged 16-25.
In the survey, 59% of youth and young adults said they were very or extremely worried about climate change and more than 45% said their feelings about climate change negatively affected their daily life and functioning.
"So, they know that the world is going to get to be a harder, darker, scarier place," said Schwartz. "And imagining themselves in that world feels really scary for them."
The study also revealed how climate change makes young people feel. In all countries surveyed, nearly 62% said they were anxious about climate change. About 67% said they were sad and afraid.
Schwartz said activism may be an effective way for kids to deal with the feelings associated with climate anxiety.
"Higher climate change anxiety is correlated with higher clinical symptoms of depression and anxiety," said Schwartz. "But what we saw was that for young people who have high levels of climate anxiety, if they have high levels of activism, then we didn't see any higher levels of depression symptoms."
Schwartz said the social aspect and peer support of activism is most likely the biggest piece to help protect against depression.
"That may mean signing petitions," said Schwartz.

Mock them at your peril. They're a massive population and they've bought into this climate change nonsense wholesale.
They're going to vote the rest of us back into the Dark Ages once they get the opportunity.
Wow, three climate fear porn articles almost in a row for today. Folks, you had better get ready to really push back on these mere journalists who couldn’t pass a “Science 101 for Two-Digit IQ Journalists” course. They’ll expect you to sacrifice...but somehow they will not sacrifice themselves. Your only recourse will be the second amendment.
***Research shows most youth are “extremely worried” about it,***
I remember reading of children, 25 years ago, coming home from school crying because of the Glo-Bull Warming propaganda that was forced upon them.
Poor “snowflakes”. The only snowflakes that are not unique in their geometry!
“Mock them at your peril”
I’ll mock them for their propensity to be mocked and I’ll mock their parents as well for being somewhat absent-minded or oblivious to what is happening to their children in school. It is a mockery, however unfortunate. If all of that being mocked is too much for their precious self-esteem then maybe they should look inside of themselves for those feelings of well-being instead of what other people have said or may have said or are thought to have said. Snowflakes...You don’t have to hire them! However, they could think about getting out there and shovel some snow from the sidewalks and driveways of the older people in their neighborhoods as a great way to “give back to the community”. They could find some real self-esteem if only they knew where it comes from.
Cults recruit entirely from psychologically damaged people. Healthy people are mostly immune to cult manipulation. The Global Warming Cult is far more sinister in that they actually inflict the psychological abuse themselves, for years, on school children.
It would be far more effective against depression related to climate-change propaganda if the youngsters were to learn to evaluate climate fear porn using actual critical thinking, and then to disregard the obvious BS.
But that won’t happen. Far easier to swallow the lies and then go join the other mindless “activists”.
Damn, the sky is falling every other minute now.
They better worry! We’re 3,500 years away from the beginning of the next glacial cycle!
Climate anxiety. Kids and young adults who struggle with this.
LOL that’ the last thing on a kids mind is climate change being preached about it or not.
Reprobates mission to destroy our youth accomplished.
Look at Greta Thunberg...a total mess mentally
