After the initial message out from mountain towns looking to learn more about what it would take to sue the United States Postal Service, the towns of Avon, Buena Vista, Parachute, Silverthorne, Snowmass Village, and Steamboat Springs, along with the town of Crested Butte have all retained the services of Kaplan Kirsh Rockwell LLP as their chosen team to look further into a lawsuit.
Dara MacDonald, Town Manager for Crested Butte, received several of complaints from these towns.
She's not frustrated with the staff themselves but frustrated with the way that they are supported by the USPS, or the lack of support rather. That, they say, leads to low staffing, which leads to undelivered mail, late mail, really long lines, and a lack of free P.O. boxes, or delivery.
"It's almost faster to drive down to Gunnison, 30 miles away to get your mail," MacDonald said.
Mountain Newsroom reporter Spencer Wilson asked why now? MacDonald's response highlighted a common issue for the mountain mailrooms.
"Last year, we lost our postmaster again," MacDonald explained. "The consistent staff turnover, no light at the end of the tunnel...we had exhausted our local options and so that has prompted us to look at what legal options may exist."
...
There's still an open invitation from both Colorado senators right now for the Post Master General to visit from Washington D.C. to figure out some of the issues or devise a situation to fix them.
Colorado Ping ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
Sue the Federal Government because their employees cannot do their job...... 🧐 let me know how that turns out.
USPS will cry poor and claim more $$ is needed to fund staffing for these Post Offices all while having no problem paying lawyers to defend this lawsuit.
In the rural area where a relative lives, the local supermarket has Amazon drop boxes. You come in, shop, and pick up your stuff on the way out.
I'm sure the USPS could likewise partner with local stores who would be willing to host boxes for customers.
Postal unions would hate it, but screw them.
Some of those towns have got wealthy people. In the USA wealthy families have got political power, if they chose to use it.
We’re in a rural area. Best we have is a UPS dropoff box in Advance Auto.
We have a Walmart and a Tractor Supply. It would make a huge amount of sense for Amazon or UPS to partner with either to set up some sort of shipping/receiving locker deal. Walmart makes more sense due to their already wide opening hours, and sort of already half-asses this with their online products but it’s basically a joke.
My observation is most WMs have plenty of wasted space that could be utilized for package storage and I bet with a smartphone app, most people could send/receive without even having an employee involved most of the time.
U.S. Postal Service wasting our money - to buy 9,250 electric vans, 14,000 charging stations .. that do not perform well at cold temperatures.
Kickbacks all around ?

Our Walmart is getting bad with having very few cashiers. They are going mostly self scan. BUT...you will find 10 employees running around the grocery isles pushing those big rolling baskets for the delivery and/or curb pick-up customers. I think it is annoying that the people that actually come into their store and buys all sorts of things, not just groceries and they have to check themselves out. But the prices are still going up.
I have mixed feelings on the self checkout lines.
They’re awfully handy when I have just a few items as the “express line” in our store has a 20 item limit and it’s also where cigarettes can be bought, so it’s typically a longer wait than the regular cashiers.
Plus I’m typically as fast as the cashiers so it saves me time unless I have something weird.
But it’s frustrating when there are empty checkout aisles and every line and the self-checkout are backed up into the clothing section and none of the managers seem to have the awareness to do anything about it.
Those mountain towns need to tell DC they are Ukrainian. Then the government will pour billions into their post office.
If there was a market, one of the private franchised mailbox services would set up shop. The Contract Postal Services generally just accept mail, they don’t deliver it. The problem is that the socialists there want Free Stuff™.

Phone company had this problem for those in Bumphuck, Egypt.
One of the big Walmarts here “upgraded” their self checkout. Frequently, up to half the machines are broken down and out of service. One pre-Christmas rush, it was closer to 2/3. I hope someone in procurement in Bentonville at least got a good kickback out of the deal.
I don’t think it’s the USPS as much as the cost of living in those places. Mail carriers can’t afford to live in the region, and good luck having the rich folks spend more to keep a post master and staff employed (they’re “the little people”).
Intersting and more so as I recall:
Strange how the USPO worked very well until JFK allowed government workers to unionize huh Moe.
Amtrak is another government parasite it hasn’t made a dime profit since 1972.
Absolutely. We live out in the boonies and we do our shopping averaging once a month. If we happen to be going to town for a doctors appt., we go then also for sundry items. So we usually have a cart full, sometimes 2. Doing that self scan is not for us!
IN that same vein-—IF developers would set aside a small space for POLICE substations, we all would be more safe.
When small BANK set ups are INSIDE grocery store with LONG hours-—I FEEL MUCH SAFER using their services.
Wow. 19 responses and no one has commented on Crested Butte. What is happening to FR?
