Alex Murdaugh's defense team is expected to rest Monday after the disgraced attorney spent two grueling days last week testifying at his double murder trial in Walterboro, SC.
Defense lawyer Dick Harpootlian said Friday that they had four more witnesses, including a crime-scene analyst, then planned to formally end their case by the early afternoon.
Attorney Creighton Waters said he expected to have one or two brief rebuttal witnesses.
Closing arguments could be as early as Wednesday.
Monday marks the sixth week of the trial that has mapped out the spectacular downfall of the powerful scion of what was once seen as an untouchable legal dynasty in the Lowcountry of SC.
Murdaugh denied fatally shooting Paul, 22, with a shotgun and Maggie, 52, with a rifle near the dog kennels at the family's hunting estate in Islandton when he took the stand Thursday in his own defense.
"Mr. Murdaugh, are you a family annihilator?" Waters asked on cross-examination.
No, I would never hurt Maggie. I would never hurt Paul," he told the Colleton County jury.
During the nine-hour grilling that ended Friday afternoon, Waters portrayed Murdaugh as a pill-addled, serial liar who was on the verge of a devastating financial reckoning.
Prosecutors have argued that Murdaugh, in an act of ruthless self-preservation, killed his wife and son to deflect from his theft of nearly $9 million from his law firm and clients to fuel a lavish lifestyle.
The 54-year-old disbarred attorney, who sobbed frequently during his testimony, admitted on the stand for the first time publicly that he had lied to investigators, friends and family about going to the dog kennels the night of the murders.
Murdaugh only came clean after cellphone video recovered from Paul's phone placed him at the crime scene minutes before the fatal shootings.

His son Paul took the video minutes before he and his mother were shot dead.
Nancy Grace says he’s guilty because he (admittedly) lied to the police right off the bat, and how would he know he needed to lie if he was innocent?
Also, there’s a PILE of unaccounted for money out there somewhere.......the 50k a week pill habit is ridiculous on the face of it.
BRING ON COUSIN EDDIE!!!
I have been watching this trial.
Alex Murdaugh admitted that he had lied to family, friends, law partners, and clients for more than a decade.
But when Alex got on the witness stand, he was telling the truth to the jury (whom he had never met) that he did not kill his wife and son.
As Rep Joe Wilson from South Carolina said to Obama: “You lie” so will the jury say to Alex.
Of course, given the level of corruption involving the Murdaugh’s, I would not be surprised to learn that some of the jurors have not been bought off by the Murdaugh’s.

Offshore accounts.
Murdaugh must be innocent because he testified that he didn’t, at any time, ever, no never, shoot his wife or son...or shoot at them on purpose, intentionally, or out of anger or fun despite what many of his friends and acquaintances might have said. And furthermore, just because he might have threatened his wife and son from time to time with a gun, it is important to remember that it was all in good fun and he didn’t ever, no never, ever mean to pull the trigger when the gun was pointed at them.
Now that's a habit. Even Hunter would be impressed.

Some jurors could also be in fear after all the deaths that have been associated with the Murdaughs.
He and others in his family have a long history of getting away with things by lying to cover them up. I suspect its about to finally stop working.
Come and whisper in my ear
We need dirty laundry...

I agree. My rough calculations are as follows:
1. Alex stole more than $10 million from clients and law firm.
2. Alex probably earned $20 million during the past 15 years.
3. Alex had about $4 million in loans.
So I estimate he had more than $30 million and his drug habit did not cost that much.
Thank goodness Bitcoin came around so he could park his excess cash in crypto.
Horrible woman. She has been wrong, VERY WRONG on many cases, Duke Lacross, et al.
That money’s off shore somewhere......or Switzerland

He gave such an Academy Award winning performance that a juror handed him a box of tissues.
He has committed enough crimes to be sent to prison for life. His hope is to get one juror to believe he might not be guilty of murder.
Nancy Grace is right this time.
Watch VINNIE POLITAN’s show on COURT TV at 7pm ET that goes over the day’s events.
As did Alec Baldwin.
A lot of this performance crap started when the touchy feelie lefties wanted the criminal to express "remorse" and sorrowful feelings. I could give a crap what they feel, commit the crime, do the time.
“His son Paul took the video minutes before he and his mother were shot dead.”
Actually, this is the prosecution’s timeline. No one really knows when they were shot except probably Alex. The only evidence supporting that is Maggie and Paul did not use their cellphones after 8:50. The county coroner said 9pm was an arbitrary time he used on the death certificates stating it could have been 8pm or 10pm.
