Ukraine ping

jimwatx: [WW3 is welcome news?]

If by WW3 you mean a nuclear exchange, that’s not happening. The Russians supplied North Vietnam and North Korea with way more and late model equipment. 100K GI’s are scattered in military cemeteries around the country thanks to Russia’s generous efforts. We never nuked Russia, because they would have nuked us right back. Same logic applies in reverse, now that the Russians are in the role we assumed in Korea and Vietnam. They nuke us, we erase their population - Putin and family become a pile of ashes.

If you were truly worried about nuclear war, you’d have moved someplace safe - like Afghanistan. And yet here you are, threatening us on Putin’s behalf with nukes. You’re not really afraid of WW3 - you’re afraid Russia will be pushed out from Ukraine. While the timing is yet to be determined, I regret to inform you that your fears of Russia’s eventual eviction from Ukrainian soil are likely well-founded.

You’re out of your mind like all neocons. And no this situation is not similar to Vietnam, Vietnam wasn’t situated on the US’s border where it might have presented a threat. If Vietnam was Mexico the US would have never tolerated the Russian and Chinese involvement that close to home.

So how are you going to actually achieve that? I never get a good answer to that question. The US and NATO aren't willing to send troops to Ukraine. I guess it's part of the Hope Strategy.

The Light Brigade might have charged Ukrainian artillery. Russian units were territorially recruited in those days. We would have to check which units’ guns they were.
Also,
Some were Cossack guns, IIRC, so possibly they were from the Zaporozhian host.

Just speculating, but here’s one way -

The Russians were forced to retreat from Kherson because US supplied missile systems interdicted the whole west Bank of the Dneiper, and the Russians were no longer able to supply it.

If the Ukrainians advance to the Perekop, their missile systems would be in range of all ports in the Crimea, plus the famous Kerch Bridge. It could be Kherson all over again.

Well said. Unfortunately, there are many on the right (not the ольгинские тролли) who are so opposed to the left they blindly ignore the rest of the world is not an extension of US politics. They equate Ukraine losing and Russia winning, as opposing Biden without regard to the long term. For those who think Ukraine is expensive, or Russia winning serves some greater good, think about the cost of the next war Russia will start if they win.

Yes, those Ukrainian resources including black soil areas, coal, ores, and petrochemical wealth will enrich Russia and its war hawks if Ukraine were to fall.

I noticed in the photos of the Berlin anti-Ukraine aid protest that there were LGBTQP flags in the crowd. That sight should be troubling to those who are reaching to sell Putin as a “stalwart” against the LGBTQP tide. Of the thousands there, many if not most were probably Russians as many reside in Berlin.

An aggressive empire like Russia that’s 4x the size of the rest of Europe combined has many neighbors. Not tolerating strong neighbors means perpetual war. We tolerate Russian ties with Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. Plenty of Latin American leaders have been making eyes at Russia and China, and mortgaging key national resources, likely in exchange for lavish bribes. We haven’t annexed a single one of them.

But this isn’t about whys, wherefores and other rabbit holes. It’s about what you can and cannot do with nukes. Their only real use against a nuclear-armed opponent is as a deterrent against being nuked. The bottom line is that if Russia nukes us, it loses 100m people and becomes China’s newest and largest province. That’s why Putin won’t use them - he loses not just Ukraine, but Russia as well. He can’t get there from here with nukes.

Great. You've managed to temporarily interrupt port operations in Sevastopol. Now you have to deal with half a million Russian troops in well-fortified dug-in positions across a 1,500-mile front.

My original question was rhetorical. I already know what it takes to get the Russians out of Ukraine and the US and Europe aren't willing to do it (too many dead bodies). This is the Neocon Dilemma. They don't have the means to achieve their fantasy end state.

Just like in Kherson, that many troops cannot be maintained without ports, or roads or rail.

If Ukraine takes territory up to the Perekop all the ports in Crimea plus the Kerch bridge will be in gmlrs or the new gmlrs-sdb range. The result will be a total supply interdiction, and it could last months.

Worse, it’s an opportunity to get rid of area SAM systems in an isolated area, again with those HIMARS systems. That could open the whole region to actual aerial interdiction. The JDAM and SDB munitions could be in play. This is more speculative, but not out of the question.

There will, then, be no half-million defenders. They will have to be withdrawn.

Russia already has hostile neighbors on its borders. Finland is not very far from St Petersburg, and so are the Baltic states. All are in NATO now.

And Russia still insists on threatening them, making enemies for no good reason, it seems, other than pleasing itself.

Russia really should have started love-bombing them thirty years ago. But no, that’s not the Russian way.
