The first 2,000 inmates of a new prison built in El Salvador to accommodate more than 40,000 suspected gangsters targeted in President Nayib Bukele's "war" on crime, have arrived at the facility.
Bukele tweeted on Friday that "at dawn, in a single operation, we transferred the first 2,000 members to the Center for the Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT)" — which he claims is the largest mega-prison in the Americas.
Bukele added: "This will be their new house, where they will live for decades, all mixed, unable to do any further harm to the population."
The president posted a video showing barefoot, tattooed men wearing only white boxers, bent over and with their hands behind their shaven heads.
Here they were stacked closely together, each sitting with his legs on either side of the man in front of him as armed guards in balaclavas look on.
They were loaded onto buses, hands and feet in shackles, to be taken to the new prison in a convoy that included helicopters.
At the new facility, the men were similarly stacked up before being led in large groups into their cells, where they are left sitting on the floor before stacked metal beds with no mattresses visible.
"We are eliminating this cancer from society," justice and security minister Gustavo Villatoro said on Twitter.
"Know that you will never walk out of CECOT, you will pay for what you are... cowardly terrorists," he added.

It’s a start but I suspect they’ll be a mass breakout in the future.
Maybe Bukele can take them all out somewhere remote and they can do a MOAB on the location. I wouldn’t want to see the new prison get messed up.
I suspect it will be very hard to run. And 40,000? The largest prison in the United States was the State Prison of Southern Michigan (SPSM). At it’s peak it only boasted a population of 5000. It was notoriously difficult to run. It was eventually split up at the turn of the millennium into 4 smaller prisons. Time will tell.

I don’t believe that is (was) the largest in the US. At least not by population.
Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola) has over 6000 prisoners.
And while these are jails, not prisons, Riker’s Island has over 13,000 inmates and Los Angeles County Jail is at 19,000+.
Escape from El Salvador!
It would be more humane to send them to trial for execution with immediate execution.
