That’s an excellent example. I’m a Yankee thru and thru, but half of my family is from the south and it’s not just a generation or two. It goes back to the 1600’s in some branches of the family tree. There’s a lot of subtle complexities built into family history and traditions. More importantly, those family histories correspond with American history. It’s what makes me the American that I am. I don’t want that history to be rewritten or forgotten because it rewrites who I am.
I attended a quilt show here in eastern TN a few years ago. One quilt was a family tree type, made by a woman who had ancestors both Yankee and Confederate. It was beautiful, and very touching/sad. Brother fighting brother, cousins...
