San Francisco could see light snowfall on higher elevations near the city — and even flurries within city limits — as another winter storm arrives for the latter half of this week, once again defying expectations of a dry winter.
Much of the state is set to experience plummeting temperatures, high winds, and heavy precipitation. The San Francisco Chronicle notes that the Bay Area may also see a “very unusual” snow event, including in the city:
An unusual burst of winter weather is on tap for California later this week as two powerful back-to-back storms drop strong winds and a wintry mix of rain and snow along the entire length of the state. This includes the chance for brief snow showers in parts of San Francisco and Oakland by Thursday morning.
…
Weather models like the European and North American are predicting the snow line will fall as low as 500 feet by Wednesday night. If this happens, [the neighborhoods of] Mount Davidson, Twin Peaks and Bernal Heights all have a chance of flurries on Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
This also means that residents in the Oakland and Berkeley hills could see a dusting of snow on Thursday morning just before the snow line climbs back up to 1,000 feet.
It has only snowed 11 times in San Francisco’s recorded history, dating back to the mid-19th century. The last time snow was recorded in the city was in 1976, the Chronicle notes.
Los Angeles residents are also bracing for heavy rain, and the nearby mountains are also expected to see a generous dumping of snow. “Parts of Southern California could see snow starting early Wednesday at elevations as low as 1,500 feet, and even lower in parts of Northern California, some forecasters said,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

The streets in SF are a mess when it snows
They’ll just point to this snow and scream “extreme weather!” “Global warming” painted them into a corner, and reality kept disproving their assertion, so they replaced it with “climate change” and “extreme weather.” The extreme weather thing has brainwashed people to believe that normal weather events that have been happening forever are instead “extreme” events that have never happened before. They also learned to stop setting dates for environmental Armageddon that were close enough that people could compare the actual outcomes against their predictions of catastrophe. Now they talk in terms of “the end of the century” and similar timeframes, because they know few will live long enough to test those predictions.
Oh nos! Flurries (or is it furries?
That’s it in a nutshell.
Some of the older firebrands are backing away from the insanity as they pointed out that recent damage in Santa Cruz was neither unusual or unforeseeable, since buildings are built right at sea level on the beaches and piers that were damaged were never built to withstand waves that had been seen on muliple occasions just in the century - not exactly “500 year events”.
I remember that one. My 5th grade teacher in Marin County threw a snowball at me. :)
According to Open Snow, Mt Baldy in San Bernardino County, elev only 4,200 feet, may crush the US record for most snowfall in 24 hours. The Sierra Nevada record is 67 inches. The national record is 84 inches, out of Alaska. Because of its position facing into the upcoming storm, up to 115 inches is forecast for M. Baldy
Briefly snowed at Treasure Island in 86 or 87.
I remember the iconic Al Gore saying “Soon we are going to experience the first of many instances of a year without a winter. The calendar will still say winter but only a brief time of freezing temperatures will happen due to the global warming crisis.”
People discarded their snow shovels and windshield scrapers.

I remember the snow in ‘76. I was living in the South Bay at the time, and it snowed there too.
Ouch-—that’s impressive. Here in the Maine midcoast I don’t think we’ve gotten more than about 16 inches so far this season.
When is this supposed to start?
Now through Saturday. ❄🌨🌬
MT Rose ski area just south of Reno has gotten over 26 feet since the late December storm. 😲
Thanks.
Am in N Nevada-—east of Reno.
SNOWING right now.
NO sign of stopping for next 5 days.
Good. I don’t have a problem sharing the wealth.
