Would be helpful to know the average train derailments occur in the USA and how those averages compare to now vein only 2 months into 2023.

Average is something like three a day. I imagine most are extremely minor. I suspect most of this is observer’s bias, but I don’t have the current year numbers to verify that.

Yes it would. How many derailments have there been involving trains NOT carrying hazardous cargo?

No data for 2023 but for 2020, 2021 and 2022 there are approximately 1000 derailments per year in the US. That’s around 2.7 per day. 2019 had ~1500. See railroads.dot.gov.
