Minnesota Democrat lawmakers push ban on gas-powered lawn mowers, chainsaws to curb 'climate pollution'

Two Minnesota Democratic lawmakers are proposing a pair of bills that would significantly impact the state's backyards and neighborhood ice rinks in an effort to combat climate change.

State Reps. Jerry Newton and Heather Edelson, members of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, introduced legislation on Monday that would block the sale of common landscaping appliances like lawn mowers and chainsaws as well ice resurfacing machines such as Zambonis, requiring that only electric battery versions be sold in the state starting Jan. 1, 2025.

The ban on lawn and garden equipment would include any machine that uses "a spark ignition engine rated at or below 19 kilowatts or 25 gross horsepower." Commonly used landscaping tools like lawn mowers, leaf blowers, hedge clippers, chainsaws, lawn edgers, string trimmers and brush cutters would all be prohibited by that definition.

The measure follows a Democrat-backed clean energy bill signed into law by Gov. Tim Walz that requires electricity production be 80% carbon-free by 2030 and 100% by 2040. Republicans labeled it the "blackout bill."

"DFLers are committed to taking action on climate – unchecked climate pollution threatens Minnesota’s future," House Speaker Melissa Hortman said after lawmakers passed the bill, according to Alpha News. "Now is the time to take bold action and ensure Minnesotans have the healthy climate and clean energy future they deserve."

I have a gas leaf blower, and a gas string trimmer and a gas lawnmower, and a gas generator.

Zero interest in replacing them with batteries

“ I have two 56 volt batteries and battery power is always at hand”

Until it’s not. I also have an EGO mower, trimmer, and blower. I’m down to 2 batteries, the big one and the small one. A replacement battery costs as much as an entire mower.

How many batteries do you think a landscaper will need to put in an 8 hour day? Will he need a gas powered generator to charge batteries throughout the day?

I can see a great business opportunity for some enterprising individual in taking orders for gas powered lawn and garden implements and then taking a semi to Wisconsin or South Dakota and loading up on such equipment and delivering it to their cusotmers.

“The loggers in the northern part of the state might not care for this legislation.”

Outstate MN, like so many other Democrat hell-holes, is, for the most part, solid red politically.

Minnesota government is owned by big city leftists, and they don’t give a rip what normal people think.

Minnesotans will have to resort to axes and hand saws to cut the firewood they will need to keep warm when they are sitting in the dark during coming blackouts and can’t charge their electric car nor the mandated electric tools. Of course burning anything to keep warm will also be banned.

Well I’ll put it this way. Conservatives resist change.

No, you are resistant to facts.

I have four chainsaws: 8", 16", 36", and 60". Find me a 36-60" electric chainsaw. There isn't one. The reason is lack of power.

Torque X Speed is POWER. With an electric chainsaw you can have torque or chain speed, but not both. Your EGO has torque, but not chain speed.

I had a job cutting about a half acre of seedling trees. I needed a small saw I could wear on a tool belt so that I could wear a backpack sprayer with a dauber on the end while cutting to treat the cut stubs within a minute (else they callus and the trees would regenerate). Stihl made their GTA 26 with marginal chain speed, but the battery is totally inadequate. They tried to get torque by reducing the chain to 6" but the torque isn't there. They do make a climbing saw that works, but they accomplished it by making the climber wear a the battery on the belt and running a cord to the saw. If you've ever climbed with gaffs and a belt, you'd know that's a safety issue, but I'd bet not.

My 8" saw is electric, a brand spanking new "Milwaukee M18 Hatchet." Milwaukee's battery is adequate (I already had 2 for a drill, which is why I bought the Milwaukee) but they went for torque instead of chain speed on an 8" bar. Yeah, it'll cut a 6" branch. So what? So will my 16" gas powered MS-200T. With a chain that slow it hops and hangs on small branches, effectively the job for which it was supposedly designed. The damned thing is dangerous.

I bought the Milwaukee for cutting sapling trees (said job for which it was supposedly designed). It's a homeowner toy, not a tool. The damned thing is dangerous for doing real work.

But for that Stihl MSA 161T, electric technology isn't there yet for chainsaws in professional use. The left doesn't care. Minnesota's timber has recovered from Fred Weyerhaeuser's rape of that State. But heck, he was a Wall Street tycoon, not a real logger. His ilk would rather kill the domestic timber industry so that their corporate donors can cash in on harvesting overseas. They'll burn our forests instead, then to be overwhelmed with exotic weeds and a carpet of seedling trees, if they're lucky. It is a catastrophic environmental policy, and (unlike you) I do know whereof I speak. Deal with it.

Trump did many good things as President, but he failed on two key issues. He failed on Covid, and he failed to reverse the EPA designation of CO2 as a pollutant, which it certainly isn’t. There were many stories that Trump would appoint Professor William Happer to revise climate policy, but he never did it. It was a lost opportunity that we all now pay trillions of $ for.

As for these Minnesota Rats, why don’t they also try to ban gasoline snow throwers? That would be the end of the Rat party in Minnesota.

The bottom line is that the consumer should decide. I live on acreage with a forest and fenced pasture.

I have 2 electric chainsaws and 5 gas saws all the way up to 84” including a couple of “pro” saws. I pick the right saw for the job.

The cordless saws work well for light cutting/trimming and they are more convenient than running a gas saw on a smaller job, but I have some trees that require two cuts with a 28” bar to drop or process for firewood.

This “proposed” law is absurd.

They think ahead. First, they will get rid of everything powered by oil products, then when everything is electric, they’ll control the flow of said electricity, which is easier to do than controlling the flow of petroleum products. And when they are ready, they’ll just shut down everything. You’ll only get as much electricity as your masters allow you to have and you’ll have no choice. You’ll do what they say, or you won’t even get that much. It’s cold in Minnesota in the winter. They can freeze you out pretty quickly by cutting off your electric heat and lights.

One word. “Ego” Best battery products out there. I have everything, but their snowblower. We don’t get enough snow to warrant replacing my gas-powered unit. 54-inch cut Zero Turn rider, 21-inch push mower, trimmer, blower, and 16-chain saw Quiet, no smell, no oil changes, no gas cans sitting around, minimal maintenance. Charge the batteries for about two hours each week and cut and trim my yard and shrubs. They are more expensive up front, but at 71 the convenience factor alone is worth it.

Technologically, we’ve reached the point where it is viable to convert to electric tools and push mowers. I went electric and love them. I don’t have a large yard so the battery makes it in one go if I dont let the grass get long or wet. For bigger things like cars and riding mowers, that’s a different story.

Until everything is electric and everybody is constantly charging them putting strain on the grid.
