The UK government announced that the country will observe a moment of silence to honour the Ukrainians and demonstrate Britain’s “solidarity” with the war effort against Russia.
In a move reminiscent of the “clap for carers” initiative during the Chinese coronavirus crisis to celebrate healthcare workers and even the annual Armistice Day commemoration remembering the huge sacrifice of the British and Empire in two worlds wars, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government has announced that there will be a “national moment” of silence on February 24th. The silence late this month marks the one-year anniversary since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.

He was generally scared of Germany’s naval rebuild.
I would use the word “concerned” not “scared”.
I know he thought the Kaiser was a sort of a spoiled adult brat. No one thought anything he (the Kaiser) did or said would lead to war. Unfortunately, there wasn’t sufficient adult supervision on either side of the channel particularly in Serbia & Austro-Hungary.
And I see WWI as Britain’s attempt to slap down those wily Krauts. Britain couldn’t stand any naval competition from Germany.
I read a recent WWI book that claims another motivation for getting involved was to give the Army something to do. This book claims the Army was outraged over the Irish Home Rule Bill and was on verge of mutiny or even a coup. First time I have ever read anything about that! One usually thinks of the UK Army as being indifferent toward politics.
Hogwash, FDR was out of ideas on the issue, except he liked the idea that the Soviets are going to move beyond their borders, for the same reasons as Churchill.
Do you realize that it was a Soviet action to establish Israel? FDR initially was negative to indecisive, Churchill strictly against it.
Churchill was a long-time Zionist who supported a Jewish state in Palestine.
LOL, he also loved little puppies. Really, British propaganda is so good at turning things upside down.
Churchill.....with his brandy, and his cigars, and his rotten paintings...ROTTEN!
Churchill is known for pro-Jewish statements but his policies were the direct opposites.
He was behind the “White book”, banning Jewish migrating to Palestine in 1922.
In 1934-1937 he tried to align with the Palestinian Jews due to Nazi propaganda among Arabs in the area, feeling that it is slipping away.
In 1937 there was “Pyle commission” studying the possibility of the Jewish state in Palestine. Churchill concluded it shouldn’t exist.
In the 1940s he blocked talks with the Axis on moving Jews to Palestine instead of concentration camps, and numerous special operations to derail related German activity.
Regarding Israel, he was a staunch critic. He even banned his officials from using the word Israel in speeches. Once its formation has become inevitable, he insisted on it of being a Jewish-Arab state, contrary to “Molotov letter” who insisted on Jewish state, believing that otherwise it is going to be unstable and underdeveloped.
So, the only Churchill’s input was actually to make it worse.
A quite one-sided piece.
