No advertisers, no outsiders, no sugar daddies, no corporate string pullers.
Definitely no government subsidies or tax breaks. No 501c or other IRS non-profit status.
This means no commercial ads. No annoying pop-ups. No ad tracking. No mail campaigns. No spam. No third-parties -- not even the IRS -- trying to control what we do or say.

Is it possible to address the issues that plague this site and drive participation down without making the fundraising problem worse? I.e., the half-dozen or so Uke war posters that dominate so many threads and attack those with different views or questions?

I don’t know. I think people that attack do it because they don’t have a good, logical argument. They are sometimes looking to get a response too. I usually ignore them.
