The ‘DeSantis Is Trump Without the Baggage’ Crowd is in for a Rude Awakening
American Thinker ^ | February 15, 2023 | Matt Kane

Posted on 02/15/2023 4:49:45 PM PST by conservative98

Since President Trump left office, many of the “trustworthy” media outlets have created a talking point that is now held by a minority, yet noticeable number of Conservative Americans. The belief is “DeSantis is Trump, without the baggage.”

If DeSantis chooses to run for president, whether that is in the next election or sometime down the road, his opponents (from both parties) and leftist media will have no shortage of ammunition to create baggage specific to him.

1) As Governor of Florida, DeSantis image as a protector of school children and being “anti-groomer” has gone unchallenged. His press secretary Christina Pushaw (more on her later) took to Twitter to categorize his signing of the Parental Rights in Education act as an “Anti-Grooming Bill.”

2) Recently, he has been accused of partying with his own female students when DeSantis was a 23-year-old teacher in Georgia in 2001. Photo evidence shows DeSantis surrounded by 3 girls holding what looks like an alcoholic beverage.

3) DeSantis began a military career where he was a Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer.

4) hich means accusations of DeSantis greenlighting cruel and inhumane forms of torture on detainees at Guantanamo Bay, including force feeding detainees through a nasal feeding tube pushed down their throats while DeSantis allegedly watched in amusement, will eventually be addressed.

5) DeSantis GOP opponents will undoubtedly question him on his Press Secretary, Christina Pushaw, who recently had to register as a foreign agent because of her paid work with, of all people, a Ukrainian politician named Mikheil Saakashvili.

Wrong. It’s that critical to defeat the uniparty. The swamp is bipartisan. DeSantis is just another career politician. People need to wake up and stop thinking dems vs repubs. It’s us vs them.

The uniparty establishment and media are pushing the idea of DeSantis. That’s A BIG CLUE. The fact that Trump is still the one they’re most against, is another BIG CLUE. Wake up people. We don’t have time for this divided crap.

The DeSantis, all the free republic fan boys are drooling over, is not the DeSantis who will be running for president. 30 seconds after he secures the nomination he is going to undergo a proctological exam like no one can imagine. The dirt is going to start to surface.

You are funny and ignore the history of the media against EVERY GOP candidate.

Of course the media will look into DeSantis (they already have, but will double their efforts) and if they fail to find anything, they will just make it up.

That is normal and not a reason to avoid DeSantis.

Yep. Judge solely by his stellar governing results and ability to select A+ people around him in all positions. Highly competent and loyal people. Trump’s selection of skunks and disloyal jerks was a complete failure. He bragged on hits uncanny ability to select winners but the opposite was true. Was true in business , but he was lousy at it in politics.

But for some reason, it’s all DeSantis. As if he was the Governor, County Sheriff, running an excavator or flying coast guard helicopters

You mean the way Trump gets credit for energy independence (did he drill the wells) the Abraham accords (did he personally negotiate) etc?

Trump set the stage for those things. So did DeSantis.

Also, DeSantis, in this last election focused on campaigning heavily to elect more Republicans so he had more folks propping him up. Trump failed to accomplish the same.

If John Bolton supports him he is not worthy of federal office.

You didn't say that when Bolton supported Trump.

I was disappointed he failed to achieve a withdrawal from Syria. I think he got snowed by the neocons in the Deep State on that.

It is funny how many times Trump gets "snowed" or "given bad advice" or "listens to the wrong people", etc, etc, etc.

After making so many managerial mistakes, you would think the problem is not everyone else, but Trump himself.

Unreal. The half-baked cult of personality around Donald Trump and endless, baseless, ignorant attacks against DeSantis that we are seeing here on FR remind me of the goofball rantings one would expect to see on DU.

We are our own worst enemy. Pathetic.

Yes, I expect the childish "guilt by association" to come from the left, not from FReepers....but they really cannot make an intellectual argument against DeSantis, so they use the same tactics as the left.

Desantis has a majority legislature. That will never happen in DC. I would rather see Desantis serve a full term and go into DC with a lot more on his resume.

Florida and the rest of the country are apples and oranges.

Thankfully that fool and Soros tool Gillium didn’t win.

He thinks them out very carefully. If he didn’t, given his directness, they would be much worse. I’ve always thought Trump pulls his punches. If he said what he really knew......it would be rough.

Bolton supported DeSantis’ run for office in 2012… at a time when Bolton was popular here in FR.

The gentlemen was quite clear they actively mislead the President. Seems like something the CINC could shoot you for - lying about troops in a war zone. Alas, he was not the man of the posters.
He didn’t start any new wars with anyone, which in this sad age of the American Empire is a commendable event in its own right.

Trying to divide the Conservatives - i still like DeSantis but he needs to ride his Governorship out and solidify his credentials instead of serving as another “Ross Perot”

DeSantis idolizers are arrogant, obnoxious, NeverTrump neocons. Why do you people always insist on hurling childish insults…

I would suggest you take a moment to reflect on the irony of your comment there. One important aspect of this is, DeSantis supporters don’t idolize him the way Trump supporters idolize Trump. DeSantis isn’t going to draw 50k to rallies, or have enough of a following to start his own Twitter site like Trump. Therefore, the DeSantis supporters are not as emotional in the debate, they’re just being rational and weighing the pros and the cons between the two candidates. And none of us are NeverTrumpers, we were Trump supporters in the past, some even donated, time or money to the campaign. Trump has just done so many things we don’t agree with, we can’t support him any more.

For someone who claims to be a perfect Christian, you don’t behave as one.

No ma’am, I don’t claim to be perfect at all. I am far from it. I’ve never even inferred that on this website. But as a Christian, I do want to see strong Christians elected into government office, especially President. And I just don’t see Trump as a good example of Christianity. I’m sure that will upset a lot of people here, but in many ways, Trump is the antithesis of Christ. From his narcissistic personality, his living in opulent wealth while donating almost nothing to charity, to never once turning the other cheek when simply questioned by others, his adulterous behavior, the huge celebration of sodomy, you name it.

But instead of just considering what I have posted, I will likely be attacked for it by some of his supporters. He did say, he could murder someone right out in the middle of the street, and he wouldn’t lose any supporters, which is probably true. But a true Christian would have never even dreamed that thought, much less spoken it, in my opinion.

They are just following the lead of Trump, who can’t come up with anything but name calling and hypocritical attacks himself. Typical Democratic playbook, which is what Trump was most of his life, of course.

Also, DeSantis, in this last election focused on campaigning heavily to elect more Republicans so he had more folks propping him up. Trump failed to accomplish the same.

I guess you didnt read this part of the article. The part about Pres Trump getting more votes than anyone in history. Or the part wheee he outperformed every other incumbent.

President Trump’s seemingly insurmountable election night leads in 2020, which were significantly larger than his leads throughout the night in 2016, somehow vanished into slim Biden victories. In other words: Without our corrupt election systems being corrected, it doesn’t matter who runs since the winner is predetermined. Trump didn’t cost us; the election was stolen. But for the sake of this discussion, we’ll say that our elections are free and fair.

Despite his alleged loss, Trump gained more than 12 million votes from 2016 (and likely more,) the largest increase in vote total for any sitting president in American history and the highest vote total by any presidential candidate ever, aside from Biden’s highly suspicious 81 million votes that same year.

Kind of curious. The Fla GOP says that the state registered 883,000 Republicans. DeSantis won by 400k+. Would he have lost if not for all the retired cops/firemen/construction workers from the North that moved down there?

The same folks that have always been moving down there.
