Investigators discovered that the driver of the Ford had been asleep in her vehicle when she awoke to a man sawing off her vehicle’s catalytic converter, and she immediately put her car in reverse

Rule #1 - don't try to steal parts from a car if the driver is in the car and able to drive away.

I wonder if she actually saw him? To do that, she would have had to get out of the car. Or did she hear the screeching of the saw blade on metal and decide to move the car?

Most likely thought it was cats fornicating under the car and she drove away to scare them off.
