Ted Cruz tells supporters he's running for re-election to the Senate in 2024, not for president
Houston Chronicle ^ | February 14, 2023 | Jeremy Wallace

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz made it clear to his supporters on Monday night that he’s running for re-election to the Senate, not the White House.

“I’m on the ballot in 2024,” Ted Cruz said. “I’m running for re-election.”

It was the most direct indication yet that the Texas Republican — who came in second to former President Donald Trump in the 2016 GOP primary and has been open about wanting to make another run for the White House — does not see a path for himself next year.

Other Republicans have stepped back from the presidential race, struggling to find a lane between Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has quickly emerged as a popular alternative to the former president, leaving little room for others.

Cruz on Monday said his focus in 2024 would be winning re-election “so we keep Texas red.”

Cruz is better off there. He’s a lawyer, not an executive.

Governors, businessmen and an occasional General/Admiral are executives…

Good. Lousy POTUS candidate. It’d be good theater to see him nominated for SCOTUS but like Rand he’s needed where he’s at.

Luck of the draw, meaning he can either run for President or run for Senate again, a choice he didn’t have in 2016.

Ted has starting to use his brain instead of his “advisors “

A wise choice only because Beto! Would probably win the seat.

I think this is a good decision. Cruz has a hardcore group of supporters and he is smart enough to recognize that Trump will win the nomination so he does not want to wear the mud.

Given what I've observed the past 4+ years we've been here in Texas, it may just be a matter of time before Beto picks off a Senate seat or Governor.

Good. Now that one is settled nice and early. I do like him as a Senator, with a loud national conservative voice.

“struggling to find a lane between Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis....”

I didn’t know Gov. DeSantis announced he was running for POTUS

Smart man. If Trump flames out or loses the general, he can run in 2028. If Trump destroys DeSantis, Cruz can run in 28. There is no space for Cruz in 2024.

I kind of hope DeSantis won’t run in 2024. I would hate to see a bloodbath that destroys one or more of the best two candidates the republicans have produced since Reagan. And it will be a bloodbath if DeSantis runs.

Anything but a professional politician, aka compulsive liar, like Biden. I agree with you.

Beto model: If at first you don’t succeed, try try try try try again.

I think if Trump wins the Primary, we’ll lose the General.
If DeSantis runs, and wins, the Primary I’m not certain who would win.
It would depend on the Democratic candidate and anger of Trump voters.
If the second option happens and Trump went 3rd party, Democrats will win.
Soon enough demographics will be so we will never have a truly conservative President again.
A Republican will win again, but what will that person stand for?

This is a smart move for a number of reasons.

Ted Cruz needs to do much more where he is.
