GOP Changes Leadership in Maine After Poor Election Showing

Former Assistant House Minority Leader Joel Stetkis was elected to serve as Maine Republican Party chair, marking a change in direction after a disappointing midterm election for the GOP.

Former chair Demi Kouzounas was ousted during a closed-door meeting over the weekend.

“This is a new day for Maine Republicans,” Stetkis, of Canaan, said in a statement. “Electing waves of Republicans at the local level and growing our party with an eye to the future begins now.”

Stetkis, who represented House District 105 from 2014 to 2022, won with 83 votes to 57 for Kouzounas.

The change in leadership comes after former Republican Gov. Paul LePage was handily defeated in the governor's race, and Republicans failed to flip either legislative chamber.

Stetkis said his “primary objective” will be to put the brakes on current Democratic Gov. Janet Mills’ agenda and adopt “commonsense conservative policy.”

Democrats attacked Stetkis as extreme, accusing him of posting falsehoods about the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and spreading misinformation during the pandemic.

Republican leadership has been changing across the country over the past several years. Nebraska and other states last year, now Maine and Kansas this year.

The old, comfortable rot is being turned out after their 2022 failures.

I'm sure there's more to come.

At least part of the success of the rat party in Maine was due to Lindsey’s proposal for a federal law to ban all abortions after 15 weeks. It brought out a good number of voters in Maine (and Minnesota I suspect). Talk about poor timing.

Talk about poor timing.

Linda wouldn't call it poor timing. eGOP didn't want a $inate majority. The timing therefore was excellent.

The first thing they should do is get a hold of Susan Collins, strap her to a rail and shuffle he out of the state.

Yeah, he did that on purpose. Because he’s an insidious phony.

They never REALLY wanted Roe vs Wade overturned. And they never REALLY wanted Obamacare repealed. Etc.

Sounds like Maine picked the right guy.

The old, comfortable rot is being turned out after their 2022 failures.

RINO-controlled state legislatures outed themselves when they ignored election fraud in 2020 so they could get rid of Trump. RINO traitors are the reason that Democrats continue to get away with stealing elections. RINOs would rather see a Democrat win than MAGA. The voters are furious and can't oust these embedded spies quick enough.

Disgusting fella. Linda won in ‘20. Set for 6 years. The next GOP POTUS needs to kick him upstairs to a cabinet position. Problem is the appointed successor. It would probably be a Nancy Mace republican.

Collins-keep her. It’s all we got.

The RNC needs to change their leadership,,,,Ronna cannot cut it. If it doesn’t happen the 24 election will be a total loss for the Republican Party again. McConnell will not help, he is in office to protect his Chinese Interests and McCarthy has started off with a bang but will be defused shortly by the Dems and Soros.

FFS! If those are the people and other limp wrists worry about not voting republican, then they can all go back to Sodom and Gomorrah and pound sand. People who have no morality or value on life don't need to be pandered to. It's no wonder this country is so f’d up.

I hope the new Chairman is a Maine First, America First person. I saw my friend, was elected but only by a small margin (4%). The district is rural western Maine. In 1992, the district ran his dad and he won by 15%.

Of course, the 'retiring' rep (defeated by my friend in the primary) endorsed the D.
