'Our Losses Were Gigantic': Life in a Sacrificial Russian Assault Wave
The New York Times ^ | February 13, 2023 | Andrew E. Kramer

Posted on 02/13/2023 9:12:27 PM PST by Berlin_Freeper

Creeping forward along a tree line late at night toward an entrenched Ukrainian position, the Russian soldier watched in horror as his comrades were mowed down by enemy fire.

His squad of 10 ex-convicts advanced only a few dozen yards before being decimated. “We were hit by machine-gun fire,” said the soldier, a private named Sergei.

One soldier was wounded and screamed, “Help me! Help me, please!,” the private said, although no help arrived. Eight soldiers were killed, one escaped back to Russian lines and Sergei was captured by Ukrainians.

I think he should try to claim victory no matter what happens. Even if Russian forces are beaten out of Ukraine he can say “Missioи Accomplisнед” and claim that NATO was taught a lesson, the dangerous Biolabs were eliminated and then jail whoever disagrees.

The Russians must suck at counterbattery fire, of that photo was staged. Lobe a mortar round, expect ten back.

[ he estimated that half of the men in each assault were wounded or killed, ]

Simple-minded probability calculations would suggest that 2 assaults = 100% chance of getting killed or wounded. That’s not the way it works, but that’s how the average prisoner would figure it. If they had known they would be sacrificed in this manner, it’s likely few would have volunteered.

My guess is that would probably work well enough for Putin to retain power in the short term. In the long run though, Putin would have shown enough weakness to be vulnerable to ouster. I surmise that Putin would be better off if Russia is so badly beaten that there is no basis for thinking that Putin did not try hard enough.

I now think that maybe it is something to be thankful for. It is better if these thugs die without doing much to harm others.

The horrible scenario would be if Russia would put them to “police” the occupied areas. There would be even more torture and rape and other war crimes.

Russians are now trying to make a hero out of a Wagner man who beat his own mother to death because she had hidden her pension money and didn’t give it to him right away.

They have always been bastards, but this pressure makes them worse.

OMG, here we go again. This Russian “Human Wave” nonsense has been around dating back to the nazi propaganda in the Second World War. Oh wait, Ukraine…NY Times, yeah this makes sense. Propaganda is their purpose.

The goal will be to retake the old Soviet empire. Russia strategically has to control the ground routes of invasion. Which happens to be west of Berlin

That is why the West is trying to sacrifice Ukraine.

The only images I’ve seen from the Russian side is a guy getting his head crushed with a sledge hammer from his own side.

https://sonar21.com/public-display-of-the-gross-incompetence-of-u-s-and-nato-military-leaders/

At the outset of the Special Military Operation Ukraine had a larger army in the field than Russia. That is no longer the case. Russia destroyed Ukraine’s tank brigades and now Ukraine is begging desperately for replacements. Ukraine’s Army has been decimated by the Russian tactic of using artillery to attack and destroy fixed entrenchments. Even if NATO decided to mobilize and send its own troops to reinforce Ukraine, that would not be enough to “expel” Russian forces. Russia is fighting for its homeland.

###

Russia’s so-called “conscripts” are military reservists, plus an estimated 100,000 volunteers who signed up. Ukraine, by contrast, is kidnapping 16 year old boys and 60 year old men off the streets in places like Kiev and Odessa. I find it hard to believe that Milley really believes the crap he is spewing. If he does then the United States military is in grave danger with a moron like that in charge.

###

Russia enjoys advantages in personnel, tanks, artillery, ammunition, electronic warfare, combat aircraft, helicopters and hyper sonic missiles. There is zero evidence that Ukraine has more courage, resilience or tactical skill than the Russians. In fact, the real asymmetry is that Russia has more trained soldiers than Ukraine by a vast margin.

###

Ukraine, with the help of the West, is sleep walking into the slaughterhouse. Ukraine and NATO’s refusal to wake up and grasp the reality of what is happening is likely to lead to the destruction of both.

Russia is fighting for its homeland.
The only Russians fighting for their homeland are the ones Putin locked up for being opposed to his Terror Invasion of Ukraine.

There are actually scholars who say that is a canard about Russian troop use in WWII

More accurate about Mao

Or Grant in general

Or Lee ordering the charge at LRT at battle of Gettysburg

What scholars? Granted, Russia’s offensive strategy after Stalingrad emphasized deep drives through German lines, but heavy artillery barrages and massive attack formations were how the initial breakthroughs were usually obtained and resistant objectives overwhelmed. More than most armies, the Russians seem to embrace attritional warfare.
