Trump should only respond to such insults if they represent a strategic opportunity. He could get some of his team to keep an eye on such opportunities and suggest ways to turn such insults to his advantage by issuing clever public retorts.

Using such opportunities to burnish your reputation for humor and wit would be quite valuable.

Responding to stupid insults with insults of your own doesn't do anything for your reputation except bring you down to the level of those insulting you.
