Do these people have to use expensive munitions to punch a hole in a balloon? Why not several 40 cal. rounds and bring it down slowly to save the payload. Stupid to use high-end munitions and jet fighters. Another thought, blowing them up is risky should they be loaded with bio-agents. Now the Chinese know how to transport and disperse bio-agent with our help.

I here’s one for the ancient Alien crowds—this is exactly how they would “disclose” their presence. Fabricate a “shoot down” and kind of cover it up.
No joke. They can float a 1000 “balloons” at $1000 a piece for a total cost of a million. We will expend 400 million in Aim 9 Block II missiles PLUS the cost of gas and maintenance on the aircraft (85k an hour without refueling).
Not for nothing, but it might be smart to find a cheaper alternative to knock these things down as this is not a very effective method to deal with them. At 40,000’ guns should be an option?

Okay. Took me long enough but here’s why China is doing this.
During a war the anti-satellite weapons attack all the military’s guiding data and signals to the Earth are quickly out of commission.
But a balloon flotilla from China would be impossible to keep track of and could supply all the guidance and reconnaissance needed by China. US find two then loses four, then track one, as the data pinpoints places for Chinese nuclear missiles to hit us.
They’re using today’s months of zig zagging and stopping and starting to see what our military knows and doesn’t know. Learning from it all.
